Dark Exits: Six Short Stories and a Novella

By Harris, D. R.

167 pp. First Edition Trade Paperback. Table of Contents: "Steps," The Red Suitcase," "Reckonings," "How Was Your Afternoon, Dear?" "The Violinist," "Showtime," and Rash: A Novella. Cover art is by the author. Front cover: "Flattened Man," back cover "Cosmic Dust," Both 2018. Excerpt from "Showtime": A man in a black wool overcoat stood at an ATM in the lobby of a bank on Broadway. A black and white Shetland collie sat at his right foot. It was after 1 a.m. The man withdrew $100, put the money in a trifold wallet, and returned the wallet to the inside breast pocket of his tuxedo. The man snapped his thumb and middle finger. The dog, ever alert to his master's movements, walked out of the bank lobby, his head even with the man's right knee. Man and dog walked two blocks down Broadway to a produce market. "No dog in store." The Man Ignored the clerk. "Every night the same. Next time, no dog in store." The man turned and left the store, the dog heeled next to his right knee. The man and dog continued down Broadway. Near the corner of 79th Street, the man stopped. In the window of a women s boutique, stood five naked, bald mannequins. A lithe, athletic woman, early thirties, was dressing the mannequins.

Free South Africa

By Keith Haring

Poster, one leaf, 48 X 48''. Lithograph on light clay paper. Fair, on account of large large chip on left affecting the word "Free." Else, good or better. Some light, short creases throughout. An approximately five-inch tear on the top and a nearly three-inch tear on the bottom. Some foxing on the bottom edge. Despite faults, an overall good impression. This poster is one of an edition of 20,000 that was distributed by the artist at an anti-apartheid demonstration in Central Park, and is a reproduction of a lithograph on rag paper created in 1984. With his signature reproduced on lower right (not signed).

Chowanschtschina [Khovanshchina; The Khovansky Affair] (2 volumes, complete)
seller photo

Chowanschtschina [Khovanshchina; The Khovansky Affair] (2 volumes, complete)

By Mussorgsky, Modest; Dmitri Shostakovich; Stasov, V. V.

362, 351 pp. including foreword in Russian and, in each volume, commentary on the text. Full conductor's scores to the opera. The dust jackets on both volumes have been modestly and professionally conserved to close tears and unobtrusively fill those places where there are chips. Both DJs are now protected. The opera was unfinished when Mussorgsky died in 1881 and was completed and orchestrated by Rimsky Korsakov and first premiered in 1886. Although Stravinsky and Ravel produced a version for Diaghilev in 1913, the legendary bass Feodor Chaliapin insisted to sing the Rimsky Korsakov version. Today, Shostakovich's edition, created in 1959, is often preferred. "The term Khovanshchina means the 'Khovansky affair,' or the intrigues of Ivan Khovansky, the leader of the Muscovite Streltsi (musketeers). Musorgsky's opera is not, however, an account of this historical event alone. Rather, it combines three great historical facts in a single fictional plot. Though Musorgsky's invention, the story refers back to real events and characters; its purpose was to reveal the historical essence that lay concealed behind the events in question."--Maes
