The Life and Work of Edward Hicks

By Beans, L. L

Trenton, New Jersey: The Author, 1951. 32 pp. illustrated. Staples rusting, very light wear. One of 799 copies printed. The author: 'I was born in Newtown, Pennsylvania in 1904, and lived there the first 24 years of my life. My home was only a five minute walk from Edward Hicks' workshop, which, unfortunately, was destroyed by fire during the early part of my life. I was well acquainted with many owners of Hicks paintings and had access to study them by merely visiting the homes of the owners. I have made a small collection of his paintings from both my own family, and private owners, two of which have been illustrated in this book. I have also illustrated a tavern sign from my collection. My main desire in writing this book has been to have as many varieties of Hicks' work represented as I could locate, with as many unusual subjects as possible. I hope all who read this small account of Edward Hicks may find something to add to their knowledge of a great man who led a common and plain, but very useful life.' Interesting source re provenance of Hicks items. Illustrated are not only tavern signs, but a covered bridge sign that graced the bridge at Washington's crossing and depicts such. The author treats Hicks' life, his work, Washington crossing the Delaware, Illustrations of farm scenes, biblical scenes, historical scenes, and tavern and bridge signs, with the author's comments.. Wraps. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Limited.

That Mighty Sculptor Time

By Yourcenar, Marguerite; trans. By Walter Kaiser in Collaboration with the Author

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux: The Noonday Press, 1993. pp. 229. Wraps illustrated with a photo of a marble head of Antinouos. 'Like waves washing against a pebbled shore, her sentences soothe, then hypnotize; before long the sound of her voice--slightly weary, serenely wise--becomes that of Reason itself . . . [Her essays] display a moralist and critic of remarkable range and sympathy.'--Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Book World. 'It goes without saying that we do not possess a single Greek statue in the state which its contemporaries knew it: we can barely discern, here and there on the hair of a Kore or a Kouros of the sixth century, the traces of reddish color, like palest henna, which attest to their pristine character of painted statues alive with the intense, almost terrifying life of mannequins and idols which also happen to be masterpieces of art. Those hard objects fashioned in imitation of the forms of organic life have, in their own way, undergone the equivalent of fatigue, age, and unahppiness. They have changed in the way time changes us.'--from the title essay.. First Thus. Trade Paperback. As New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
