The Blaeu firm was official cartographer to the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and Blaeu globes were carried on all VOC vessels; its map-making was of the highest quality at a time when the Low Countries were at the forefront of the international market. This may be one of Wilkinson’s earliest publications, printed as a companion to his reissue of ‘Several Prospects of the Rock, Town, Castle, Fortifications, & Bay of Gibraltar’, which he seems to have inherited with the stock of John Bowles. Indeed, it may have come from the same source: the British Library holds an anonymous example which has been tentaitively dated to c. 1727 (OCLC 557547832) and the Harvard copy has been attributed to John Bowles (OCLC 945751831). Roughly contemporary with the Great Siege of 1779-1782, Wilkinson’s edition still refers to George Prosper Verboom, the Spanish engineer at the 1727 siege, and makes repeated references to this ‘present’ siege which had ended over twenty years before Wilkinson’s birth. Augsburg , c. 1770 . Copper engraving, 49.5 x 59 cms, original hand-colour, blank verso. The map shows the Straits, the prospect at the foot is a bird's-eye plan of the Rock itself and its fortifications; the key is in both French and German. Tobias Conrad Lotter inherited half of the business established by his father-in-law, Matthäus Seutter; in 1758 he established his own firm, taking his share of the copper printing plates. Map

Antwerp: Plantin-Moretus , 1624. Copper engraving, 37.5 x 49.5 cms, modern hand colour, small burn hole in table of peoples and places, Latin text on verso. Our example was published by Balthasar Moretus at the Plantin Press, in the final edition of the Parergon. Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is generally considered the first modern atlas of the world, originally published in 1570. Ortelius gathered and selected the best available cartographic knowledge and presented it in a single volume, duly credited and finely engraved in a consistent style, with explanatory text. The Theatrum was very decorative and hugely popular amongst the wealthy and educated, running into over forty editions in Latin and the major European languages. For Ortelius himself, however, his accompanying atlas of ancient geography, the Parergon, was a "personal work" (Koeman). A variant in the NMM collections (PAG9025) includes Nelson’s signal ‘England expects every man to do his duty’ above the text in the upper margin, and the somewhat idealised scene depicting Nelson briefing his captains is rendered in full hand colour. Grive and printed by Day & Haghe, and published by Wyld in ‘Maps & plans showing the principal movements, battles and sieges in which the British Army was engaged during the war from 1808 to 1814 in the Spanish Peninsula and the south of France’. The plan was taken from the original survey and drawing of Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell. Mitchell was probably not present at Wellington’s 1810 victory at Bussaco, where Anglo-Poruguese forces repulsed five determined attacks against their positions on the heights. He may have have joined the British Army in Portugal as a volunteer (effectively a junior officer serving without pay), but nothing is documented until he was commssioned into the 95th Rifles in 1811, at the age of 19.
