Description:
London, c. 1855. Steel engraving, 26 x 32 cms, original outline colour, blank verso; engraved by John Rapkin for the Illustrated Atlas with vignettes of Sebastapol, Varna, Odessa, Sinope, Constantinople and Silistra drawn and engraved by Henry Winkles. The map has been updated to show the 300 mile submarine telegraph cable between Varna and Balaclava, laid by Robert Stirling Newall during the Crimean War, which was operational from April 1855. It was the longest submarine cable of its day, cut two days from the time it took to send and receive messages (the typical journey time across the Black Sea by ship) and once linked with the rest of the telegraph system allowed, for the first time (and for good or ill), near instantaneous communciation between Paris and London and the Allied commanders in the field. Description:
Paris: Chez Jean, 1812. Engraved folding map, sheet size 89 x 66 cm, engraved by Vallet, original hand colour, two sheets joined then dissected into nine panels and laid on linen, folding into mottled paper boards, somewhat rubbed and worn. Imperial Russian coat of arms above cartouche; legend top right detailing the regions of European Russia. Moithy died in 1805 and the publisher, Jean, is re-purposing an earlier map, Carte générale de l'empire de Russie comprise en Europe, which was published in 1788. Our version would have helped the French public follow Napoleons invasion of 1812. Three examples of this edition located on Worldcat: OCLC: 494308591 (BNF); 1284691110 (Zurich); 730020786 (SLUB Dresden). Map

Description:
Vienna, Gustav Wegelein, 1854. Lithograph, 22.5 x 29.5 cm on sheet 25.5 x 32 cm, blank verso with ink stamp of Munich collector Dr Franz Schnitzer (d. 1901; library sold at auction in 1902: #63 of the new contributions added by Einstein and Goldstein to their 1918 edition of Fagans Collectors Marks). Austrian pictorial map, satirising the Crimean War, published in July 1854 in No. 55 the 'Illustrirte Novellen-Zeitung' (between pp. 436 and 437). Lithographed by Gustav Wegelein (fl. 1851-80). Austria remained neutral during the Crimean War, fearful of the expansion of Russian influence despite the recent military support it had received from Russia, which kept the Habsburgs on the throne after the revolutions of 1848. Our maps creator seems to suggest that the Ottoman Empire was vulnerable to being torn apart by its supposed allies, Britain and France. In the event, neutral Austria, left diplomatically isolated and exposed to invasion and revolution,…

Description:
Augsburg, c. 1730. Copper engraving, 49.5 x 58 cms, original hand-colour, blank verso. A detailed early 18th century map of north-western Russia, following the cartography of De lIsle, which includes the recently-established settlement of St Petersburg, described on the map as a city built by the Tsar. Matthäus Seutter (1678-c.1757) was apprenticed to Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremburg in 1697, but in 1707 returned to Augsburg and founded his own map publishing house, which became the primary competitor of the Homann firm. The rival businesses dominated the German, and to a significant extent the international map markets throughout the eighteenth-century; Tobias Conrad Lotter inherited half of his father-in-law's business and in 1758 he established his own firm, taking his share of the copper printing plates.
