Henty used this reputation to create tales of daring adventures by European adventurers for his juvenile audience. This is probably his best known novel of this genre set in Southeast Asia. It is very much a tale of the daring and adventure in the style of the better known Among Malay Pirates. the other stories are On the Track, a tale of business intrigue, and A Frontier Girl set in North America. Like much of Crichton's work, this 600 page novel, a "techno-thriller," the story is based on a mixture of science and speculation. No great friend of environmentalists, the author attempts to convince his readers of his argument that scientific study of the environment is, inter alia, too intertwined with politics through this fast moving story, a very extensive bibliography and extensive footnotes.
