Description:
U.S.A: Anchor Books/ Doubleday, 1961. Paperback. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Trade Paperback in Very Good Condition. Bright and clean wrappers, slight crease to rear lower corner, and slight wear to spine head and heel. Soundly bound, square. Internals quite clean and completely unmarked. All the essays are complete except that of Locke--for which even he advised abridgment. Berkeley's essays include three dialogues between Hylas abd Philonous in Opposition to Skeptics and Atheists. Empiricism was born in 1690 with Locke's "Essay" and was the reigning school of thought until 1739 when Hume's "Treatise" strangled it. What started as common sense dualism in Locke dwindled into optimistic idealism in Berkeley, and then into the disintegrating skepticism of Hume. So you will read when you read and examine these essays. 517 pages. 8 x 5.2 inches. 1961, Anchor Books/ Doubleday, USA
