A white man, during the Civil War, he was a colonel in the First South Carolina Vols from 1862 to 1864. Following the war, he continued to write about the experiences of Black soldiers. 1856. Manuscript. ALS single sheet dated July 16, 1856, one paragraph, light mailing folds but clean and bright. Addressed to one Second Asst Engineer Montgomery Fletcher instructing him to report to the Engineer Chief of the Navy for examination in view of promotion. Signed "J.C. Dobbin". James Cochrane Dobbin (1814-1857) was a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina and a graduate of the University of North Carolina in 1832. He was a member of the United States Congress 1845-47 and the North Carolina legislature 1848-52. As Secretary of the Navy under President Franklin Pierce, Dobbin authorized the Perry Expedition to Japan. Ill health forced his resignation from the Cabinet on the spring of 1857 and he died of tuberculosis that October. Montgomery Fletcher, to whom the order is addressed, would later serve as Chief Engineer aboard the "Saranac" of the Pacific Squadron of the U.S. Navy during the Civil War.

1888. mss. Autograph album page 7" by 4" dated Dec 1st (18)88 inscribed in ink "Take my advice young man and / (followed by a musical quotation that reanslates to "B natural but B sharp/ P.S. Gilmore". Some soiling, particularly about the edges which are a bit ragged and rounded. The reverse bears two other autograph inscriptions, one from Estrella Sylvia with her notation "America's only premiere, Dec 5, 188, Urbana, Il." (she was an operatic singer who appeared at the People's Theatre while Gilmore was a manager there); an additional holograph poem signed by one Chas L. Adams. P.S. Irish-born Patrick S. Gilmore was a musician, composer band leader and musical impresario. He most famously wrote the Civil War song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again" while serving as Grand Master of the Union Army bands sometime in 1863.
