Description:
London: Published by The Daily Telegraph, 29 March 1948. Photograph. This original press photograph shows a smiling Winston S. Churchill in late March 1948 looking down into the pram bearing his grandson while tickling the infants cheek. The silver gelatin press measures 11.5 x 7.5 in (29.25 x 19.05 cm). The condition is good plus, with edge wear, a closed tear to the top that intersects Churchills hat along with associated wrinkling and a small chip. There are small pieces missing to three corners of the photo and creasing to the upper and lower edges. Despite the wear and flaws, the image of Churchills countenance and hand are notably sharp and quite charmingly sentimental. Affixed to the verso is the clipped newspaper caption from original publication, the right edge of which is missing, making a word or two of each line difficult to determine. The caption reads: Mr. Churchill with the infant son of daughter, Mrs. Christopher Soames. The baby was christened Arthur Nicholas Winston at West__…

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are…

Description:
1875. Single plate (22.9 x14.8cm) extracted from an early issue of Irving's The Theatre magazine, comprising tipped-in Woodburytype photograph (14.6 x 9.6cm) of Terry seated in her costume for the Merchant of Venice, with "The Theatre, No. 1, Third Series. Woodburytype" printed directly underneath. Terry sits aslant to her right, looking to her left, with her left hand raised and index finger pointing up, two books piled in the background tightly framing the back of her hand. With (mis)quotation from Act 4, Scene 1 in facsimile of Terry's flamboyant hand underneath: ""Come Merchant have you anything to say"?/ Portia/ Ellen Terry:". Triangle of white to bottom right corner of photograph, presumably from glitch in its reproduction, minute patch of wear to Terry's right cheek, page mount a little soiled, toned and wrinkled. Still, a pleasingly sharp and rich photograph for its age, indeed, as one would expect from the expensive Woodburytype process. Very good The University of Washington Libraries…
