Hiding in Plain Sight: Essays in Criticism and Autobiography. Broadside published by Okeanos Press and distributed at a reading at Black Oak Books by authors Louise Gluck (recipient of 2020 Nobel Prize for literature), Thom Gunn and Robert Hass. One of an unknown number of copies printed, this has been additionally signed by the three authors and is scarce thus. Black Oak Books was a premier location for touring authors and was a fixture in the Berkeley literary scene for 33 years before closing its doors in 2016. Black Oak and Okeanos combined to publish a number of high quality broadsides to commemorate author readings, and they are highly collectible. Size is 8.5" X 14". A fine copy of this interesting piece of ephemera.

The Gehenna Press: Northampton, MA 1963. Limited edition to 300 numbered copies, this is #22. Not to be confused with the subsequent unnumbered trade edition. Colophon illustrated by Press Founder Leonard Baskin. A presentation copy from Baskin, signed and inscribed "for Louis". Though not certain, it seems likely that the recipient is Baskin's close friend Louis Smith. Smith (known as Smitty) ran a framing, glazing and art supply store in Northampton, and between 1955 and 1974, Baskin engraved a series of rooster illustrations for Smith's shop. In 1999, this series was printed under the title "Smitty's Cocks" in a limited signed edition, noting "The friendship between the Smiths and Baskin was legendary and fruitful. First edition of author's first book, warmly inscribed to Ellis' close associates:
"For Rik & Margot / Who have had / the dubious privilege to / watch young Ellis in / transition as he wrote / this book. Johnson was no / more indebted to that "School / of the Prophets" than I am / to you"
signed as "Joe Ellis" and dated in the year of publication. A fine copy in near fine dust wrapper with some slight fading to the spine, trifle rubbing to the spine tips, one tiny nick, and a little soiling.
Ellis won the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his work Founding Brothers, exploring how the interactions between the leading figures of the US Constitutional era profoundly influenced the early development of the Republic. Ellis is also credited with leading a revival of interest in John Adams, a President he viewed as under-appreciated for both his character and achievements.

Limited edition 100 copies signed by the author. This is number 70. Quarter leather. A near fine copy with sharp edges and corners; spine slightly faded and rubbed. Slipcase slightly dust soiled but still fine.

Dublin: Peppercanister/Dedalus Press 1997. First edition. One of 250 hardbound copies. Though not called for, this copy has been signed by the author. Slight spine lean, almost inevitable due to the width of the binding in relation to width of text block, otherwise fine in fine dust wrapper.

London: The Nonesuch Press, 1926. Limited edition, #98 of 1250 copies on japon vellum signed by the author. Pages uncut and untrimmed. Top and bottom spine darkened, otherwise an about fine copy. Parchment dust wrapper, trimmed short of board edges as issued, is toned and a bit wrinkled with one chip.

New York: Living Hand, 1976. First Edition.
Limited Edition this is #260 of 500. Though not called for, signed by Auster.
After graduating Columbia in 1970, Paul Auster moved to Paris where he earned a living working as a telephone operator for the Paris bureau of the New York Times and translating French poetry. While in Paris, Auster founded Living Hand, both a little magazine and a small, independent publishing house. Living Hand took its name from Keats ("This living hand, now warm and capable"). Eight issues of Living Hand were published, containing a great number of Auster's translations. This is issue # 7, a full length monolog of Selected Poems from Andre Du Bouchet, translated by Auster.
