Christiansburg, Virginia: Unpublished, 1970. Gelatin silver print. 10 inches by 8 inches. Unmounted. Photographer's stamp on the verso. Vintage (circa 1970) vernacular photograph by Earl Palmer, a Virginia photographer who spent 50 years photographically documenting everyday life in Appalachia. University of Kentucky professor of Appalachian studies Harry Caudill said of Palmer: "Palmer has given us the best view we will ever have of life and work in the Southern Appalachians. . . . His magnificent collection of photographs preserves the old way of life for us to study and ponder." Palmer's photographs are now housed in the Earl Palmer Appalachian Photograph and Artifact Collection at Virginia Tech. An excellent study of his work can be found in the book by Jean Haskell Speer, The Appalachian Photographs of Earl Palmer, published by the University of Kentucky Press in 1990.
