London: Robert Hale Ltd. Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket. 1949. 1st UK Edition. Hardcover. VG red textured cloth-covered boards with decorative black titling to the front board and spine. In the original publisher's pictorial dust-jacket. A few closed tears, corner rubs/nicks, and a couple small repairs to the reverse of the d/j but in overall Very Good condition. The dust-jacket Is price-clipped, but the d/j is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks Near Fine. Some light offsetting to the front endpaper.. Otherwise Internally Excellent. A former owner's name and date on the reverse of the front free endpaper, o/w no other inscriptions or marks. Very Clean, tight and bright. A Black and white frontispiece/title page. (8) + 180 pp. Illustrated throughout in black and white by the Author. CLEAN TIGHT and BRIGHT. " A skilful blend of truth and nonsense about a professor's balloon journey around the world and his involvment in the great explosion of Krakatoa. Winner of the Newbery Medal for 1948, and wonderfully illustrated in b/w by the author. A very nice 1st UK Edition copy in the lovely d/j. See Images. ; TALL 4to 9" - 10" .

Synopsis

The Twenty-One Balloons is a novel by William Pène du Bois, published in 1947 and awarded the Newbery Medal for excellence in American children's literature in 1948. The story is about a retired schoolteacher whose ill-fated balloon trip leads him to discover an island full of great wealth and fantastic inventions. The events and ideas are based both on scientific fact and imagination, and the descriptions are accompanied by illustrations by du Bois.
