London: Mills & Boon, Limited. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1913. Reprint. Hardcover. In the original black (very dark blue? ) cloth-bound boards, the front board lettered in red, but the spine panel titled in gilt, with the publisher's monogram stamped in blind on rear board. An oval paper onlay portrait of 'Mr. Gerald du Maurier as Arsene Lupin is affixed to the bottom corner of the front cover, (Du Maurier performed this part at the Duke of York's Theatre, London, which opened 30th Aug, 1909.). Bottom edge untrimmed. The head and tail of the spine are both lightly 'pushed' from storage and a little light rubbing to the tip of the top front corner. One small 'indent' to the rear board, o/w covers VG. All Hinges secure. The page fore-edges are toned with age as usual in books of this age, but lightly and uniformly. Overall the covers are Very Good and the book looks very good on the shelf. Originally created in 1905 by French writer Maurice Leblanc. The character was first introduced in a series of short stories serialized in the magazine 'Je sais tout'. The first story, "The Arrest of Arsène Lupin", was published on 15 July 1905. This book was originally a 4-part play written by Maurice Leblanc and Francis de Croisset in French in 1908, it was subsequently novelized by Edgar Jepson and published in 1909 in the US as "Arsène Lupin: By Edgar Jepson". This UK copy is Undated on the title page, but at the foot of the reverse of the title page it states "Copyright in the USA by Curtis Brown & Massie of New York 1909", but in the Catalogue at the end their is a note 'Summer fiction 1913 - so I have to assume this is a later reprint dated 1912/13? Internally plain cream endpapers - slightly browned. No Inscriptions or major marks. (vi) + 344pp + 32 page Undated Publisher's Catalogue at the end. This novelization of the play features "The Prince of Thieves" Arsene Lupin, France's greatest criminal." Hubin (1994). A fictional gentleman thief and master of disguise...
