Description:
Penrith, 1866. Book. Fine. Penrith, U.K. 9 September 1866, stamped 10 September 1866. Autograph letter from Lord Brougham to Albert Megson, Manchester. "Private, 9. Sept. 1866, Lord Brougham presents his compliments to Mr. Megson and assures him that he wishes as well as possible to the proposed meeting. But in his capacity of judge in the highest court of appeal it would be improper for him to attend the meeting. He read with much concern the account of the late execution in Manchester & he had conceived that the late resolution of both Houses had been enforced to prevent public executions." Written in the third person. In a hand-addressed envelope, signed with his name, "Brougham" with one penny postage and stampings from Penrith and Manchester. Fine..

The Chancellor (Brougham) will take an early opportunity to present the petition to the House of Lords. Brougham was Lord Chancellor of England from 1830-1834 and is most well-known for being instrumental in passing the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act in August, which abolished slavery throughout the British Empire, 1833, a few months after writing this letter.
