The History of the Blues The Roots, the Music, the People: from Charley Patton to Robert Clay

By Francis Davis

New York: Hyperion. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1995. Second Printing. Hardcover. 0786860529 . Ex-library book, still in very good condition. Laminated cover and usual ex-lib type of markings. Light scuffing to covers, light soiling outer edge of pages and small edge stain rear pages, couple earmarks. Book otherwise clean and intact. B/w illustrations. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; "Since its origin in Mississippi before the turn of the century, the blues has been pronounced dead many times. Davis (music critic of the Atlantic) assures us that it "rises up like Lazarus every ten years or so. " This book, published in advance of a three-part PBS companion series scheduled to air in the fall of 1995, is a great starting place in understanding the continued appeal of this uniquely American music. Moving from its roots in field hollers, work songs, spirituals, country reels, and Anglo-Scottish ballads to its present-day uses selling diet soda and laxatives, Davis profiles the major artists and the developmental changes of the music. An extensive discography and bibliography give ample resources for future exploration, while a "Blues Timeline" offers an at-a-glance overview of blues milestones in relation to corresponding events in art and history." IN SEARCH OF THE IMMORTALS Mummies, Death and the Afterlife

By Howard Reid

Headline Book Publishing. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket. 1999. First Edition. Hardcover. 0747275556 . Ex-library book, but still in great condition - laminated cover and usual ex-lib type markings. Pages are clean and tight, one earmark seen. Jacket has light scuffing. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 307 pages; Review: "This vivid, sympathetic account of the world's mummy-making cultures contributes much to the mummy trade, which does such a brisk business these days in books and on programs like National Geographic Explorer and the Discovery Channel that it might seem that there is nothing left to say. Another recent contribution to the genre, Heather Pringle's outstanding The Mummy Congress (Forecasts, May 21) , will likely garner more attention this summer, but for its freshness and sensitivity, Reid's should do very well also. Reid, a documentary filmmaker and anthropologist living in England, sets out for exotic regions and vivifies ancient mummy-making cultures, artfully blending living and dead voices. He cites ancient scribes like Herodotus, Tacitus and the Babylonian author of the Gilgamesh epic, alongside accounts of and by the living descendents of mummy makers. Primarily, he seeks to understand "the paths that [these cultures] may have intended to tread beyond life" by examining "the bodies themselves, their attire and tomb accoutrements." Reid visits with the Maku in the Amazon to unravel the mystery of the Chinchorros of Peru, whose mummifying culture predates Egypt's. At a winter camp in southwest Siberia, he learns about the burial rites of the Kazakh nomads' warlord ancestors. He investigates the bog bodies of northern Europe; the peoples who established the Silk Route in China, whose mummies show evidence of an ancient European influence in the East; and the Guanches of the Canary Islands, who shared unexpected cultural links with the Egyptians. This intellectual adventure story focuses as much on life as on death; indeed, the way a culture regards death, the author implies, says much about how it regards life. (Aug. ) Forecast: The Mummy Congress might steal this book's thunder, which would be a shame, as this deserves wide readership. " [650] .

TOILETS TOASTERS AND TELEPHONES The How and why of Everyday Objects

By Rubin, Susan Goldman

Scholastic Inc. Near Fine. 1998. First Edition. Softcover. 0439104920 . Excellent condition - clean and unmarked, slight wear at corners. B/w illustrations. 132 pages. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 132 pages; This entertaining history of household objects provides the inventors, the ideas or needs behind the innovations, and the dates they were invented. Separate chapters address bathrooms (toilets, sinks, bathtubs) , cooking (stoves, toasters, refrigerators) , cleaning up (laundry machines, irons, vacuum cleaners) , telephones, pens and pencils, typewriters, and more. Rubin (Emily in Love, 1997, etc. ) explains how the idea for the book came about; when she was remodeling her kitchen and chose her new stove, its red knobs so ``dazzled'' her that she began thinking about good design. Others have thought about good design, too; in 1938, Rubin points out, household objects began to be recognized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City as ``applied arts.' ' The large black-and-white pictures, especially of the early prototypes, offer clear reference points for the progression of machinery through the ages. Computers, cellular phones, Caller IDreaders will never take them for granted again after reading about their remarkable predecessors. (Nonfiction. Ages 8-12). [240-osl] .

LIVES IN CONTEXT The Art of Life History Research

By Ardra L. Cole

AltaMira Press. Very Good-. 2001. First Edition. Softcover. 0759101442 . Cover has light scuffing and light edge/corner wear. Pages are all intact and clan, however numerous pages have yellow highlighting, somewhat less towards rear of book. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 272 pages; The reflexive turn in qualitative research has transformed the process of doing life history research. No longer are research subjects examined through the lens of the all-knowing but supposedly invisible researcher. As Ardra Cole and Gary Knowles point out in this fresh introduction to conducting life history research, the process is now one of mutuality, empathy, sensitivity and caring. The authors carry the novice researcher through the steps of conducting life history research-- from conceptualizing the project to the various means of presenting results-- with an eye toward understanding the complex relationship between participant and researcher and how that shapes the project. In addition to examples from their own research, Cole and Knowles bring in the work of a dozen novice researchers who explain the challenges they faced in developing their own life history projects in a wide variety of settings. Well written, interesting, and pedagogically sound, LIVES IN CONTEXT is the ideal text for teaching life history research to students and an important reference for the bookshelf of all qualitative researchers.
