Beautiful 19th century edition of Hugo's classic novel. According to the publisher's preface, this was the first English translation to include a more-complete Book V. Tan and guilt marbled paper over boards with tan leather spine strip and corners. Gilt on corners and spine; five raised ribs across spine. Text block has gilt top. Double protective tissue over B&W frontispieces on both volumes; small tissue is detached in Volume 1 but all are otherwise intact. All five B&W illustrated plates are intact. Bindings are tight.FON on frontpapers dated 1901, both volumes.Covers are stained and worn, with fraying and bumping on corners. Spines are worn with flaking. Pages are age tanned with some stains.
