Twelve page Teresian Bibliography at the back, footnotes throughout. The library markings, none of which are external, are a stamp on the title page and unused attachments on the back end papers. The front free end paper has been removed, the black cloth on the spine is quite faded and the fore corners of the bords are bumped with the bottom corners being worn. Pichon was the spiritual director of St. Thérèse of Liseieux, a very close friend of the Martin family and the director for Thérèse's sisters. The library markings, none of which are external, are a stamp on the title page and unused attachments on the back free end paper. The book shows minor shelf wear to the spine tips and is otherwise clean with a sound binding. The dust jacket is quite worn on the head edge and the spine is a tad faded. .

This is not the first edition as it lacks that identifier on the copyright page and is a later printing (Dell'Isola - citation A11). The dust jacket references "Seeds of Contemplation" as being his most recent book. Light blue cloth over boards with gilt lettering and decorations on the spine and a gilt "Chi-Rho" device centered on the front board. The text block head edge is stained a blue though now much more of a gray than blue. Photographic end papers by Yvonne Sauvgeot. Ilustrated with 17 pages of black and white photographs one of which is the frontis piece, the other 16 pages being in a center section. Six page bibliography, 9 page "Glossary of Some Monastic Terms" and a 9 page index. A description and history of Cistercian life looking at some of the major Cistercian congregations. The book shows mild wear to the spine tips and has a previous owner's dated name (Chistmas 1949) in pencil on the blank recto of the frontis piece photograph. The dust jacket is clipped on all 4 corners with a largish clip on the "price" corner, the top of the front flap. Mild wear to the edges of the jacket mostly at the spine tips with one chip in the lower front spine corner and 2 scuffs or rubs in the spine itself, one almost being a small closed v-shaped tear. The spine is a tad darkened as are the margins of the back panel. All-in-all, a rather nice copy of one of Merton's earlier and important works. .
