Boston: Little, Brown, 1857. First Edition; two volumes; publisher’s cloth; some fraying; a very good or better set. Presentation copy; inscribed by the editor, son of Daniel Webster, “To Hon. Franklin Pierce, President of the United States from his obliged and grateful friend & servant, Fletcher Webster, Dec 18, 1856.” With bookplates and the signature of Pierce in each volume. Webster served both Massachusetts and New Hampshire in Washington; Pierce was from New Hampshire. Fletcher Webster was killed in 1862 at the second battle of Bull Run.


Gray’s Elegy


Boston: Moses A. Dow, n.d. [probably 1852]. First Edition of this memorial volume dedicated to Daniel Webster, Quarto; publisher’s gilt-decorated cloth; minor foxing and some cloth mending of the spine, yet overall a bright and attractive copy. Profusely illustrated and with a frontispiece of Webster. This edition prints an unsigned biography of Webster as well as a preface attesting to his high regard for this poem.
