Boston: Little, Brown, 1857. First Edition; two volumes; publisher’s cloth; some fraying; a very good or better set. Presentation copy; inscribed by the editor, son of Daniel Webster, “To Hon. Franklin Pierce, President of the United States from his obliged and grateful friend & servant, Fletcher Webster, Dec 18, 1856.” With bookplates and the signature of Pierce in each volume. Webster served both Massachusetts and New Hampshire in Washington; Pierce was from New Hampshire. Fletcher Webster was killed in 1862 at the second battle of Bull Run.

Gray’s Elegy

First Edition of this memorial volume dedicated to Daniel Webster, Quarto; publisher’s gilt-decorated cloth; minor foxing and some cloth mending of the spine, yet overall a bright and attractive copy. Profusely illustrated and with a frontispiece of Webster. This edition prints an unsigned biography of Webster as well as a preface attesting to his high regard for this poem.
