Handwritten. Good. No Binding. 1864. HANDWRITTEN 1st DRAFT OF A RESOLUTION TO RAISE FUNDS (by the national delegates to the Democratic Convention) for the family of Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois (the Democratic presidential candidate of the famous 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates). Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois, statesman and patriot, ran against Abraham Lincoln in the historic 1858 Presidential election. Douglas died suddenly in June, 1861, and at the Democratic National Convention of 1864, the first after Douglas died, a resolution was adopted to raise charitable funds for his family. The final resolution was presented to Douglas's widow and children, who were 'left in comparative indigence by the sudden decease of their supporter'. This initial draft to benefit the widow and children of Stephen A. Douglas - had $2000 commited thus far [as written on reverse of sheet]. The first subscriber was August Belmont Sr., a German-American financier, diplomat, politician and party chairman of…

Description:
NY: New American Library, 2000. Book. Fine. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. 2000, 1st Edition. Matt Drudge signed, inscribed the book. 'The Drudge Manifesto' features a transcript of the Q & A session held June, 1998 in Washington, DC's National Press Club. The book lays out Drudge's raison d'être; his stream-of-consciousness writing describes how he got his 'Drudge Report' stories, how he focused the news in a particular direction and of his mocking his critics. The book contains emails sent by readers to Matt Drudge, who's start-up news-site was the first to expose the Bill Clinton/ Monica Lewinsky blue dress story- thereby establishing the Drudge Report as the go-to site for the next 2 decades. Drudge dedicated his book to Linda Tripp (Monica's confidante), who went public with details of President Clinton's sex scandal. In fine condition. .

Description:
Germany: Scalo Verlag AC, 1998. Book. Illus. by Gilles Peress. Near Fine. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. This book is the harrowing account of genocide by Eric Stover, with photographs by Gilles Peress, of how-- from a hell of mud and decomposing bodies-- investigator Haglund began to piece together victims' identities and the terrible ways they died. Over 40,000 Muslim refugees were living in and around Srebenica when it fell to the Serbs, under General Ratko Mladic in July 1995. Of the men who fled, or were rounded up by Serb troops, many were never seen again. Stover talks to the surviving families, women and children, including the women of Srebrenica still clinging to the hope that their men are alive-- even as Haglund's investigations prove otherwise. Mladic has since been charged with crimes of genocide, but Stover identifies a lack of political will to arrest the criminals and bring them to trial. Inscribed by Eric Stover. Small erasure mark at top corner of first…

Description:
U.S.A.: Thomson West, 2008. Book. New. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). Presentation copy, inscribed by Antonin Scalia on the half-titile page. Scalia was appointed to the Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, and has been described as the intellectual anchor for the originalist and textualist position in the Court's conservative wing. In their professional lives, courtroom lawyers must do these two things: speak persuasively and write persuasively. In this noteworthy book, two of the most noted legal writers of our day - Justice Antonin Scalia and Bryan A. Garner - systematically present every important idea about judicial persuasion in a fresh, entertaining way. Making Your Case: The Art of Persuading Judges is a guide for novice and experienced litigators alike. It covers the essentials of sound legal reasoning, including how to develop the syllogism that underlies any argument. From there the authors explain the art of brief writing, especially what to include and what to omit, so…

Description:
Pasadena, CA, 1918. Book. Good. Soft cover. Inscribed on the Cover By Upton Sinclair. 1st Edition. This excoriating critique of religion, especially as represented by powerful clerical institutions, is a lesser-known work by the author who had earlier become famous with his publication of The Jungle, an expose of the poor labor conditions and unsanitary practices in Chicago's meat-packing industry. More than just a tirade against religion, this is an impassioned, idealistic socialist writing at the beginning of the First World War, when the notion of an international socialist revolution still seemed like a very real possibility to many of the left-leaning thinkers of the day. Sinclair's chief concern is social justice and his aim is to enlighten common people by training his critical intelligence like a sharpshooter on the many hypocrisies of established religion, which stand in the way of achieving a just society for all. More than anything he is particularly incensed by the collusion of…
