Stamp of the Antwerp publisher Philippum Lisaert below, not seen on other copies. Small quarto. Text in Latin and French. Title page with Horis Svis Quaeque Placet engraved horological vignette. Dedication a Seignour Jean de Montfort, Conseillier et Maistre. Lectori et Spectatori. Approbatio. 2pp. 23pp text, 207 emblems on 23 plates. Full leather, spine renewed in the original style, retaining the original seventeenth century boards. Original seventeenth century marbled endpapers. Small ink dots to upper corner of title page, occasional small spots and light toning. Endpapers darkened to edges. Original boards a little scarred with age, corners rubbed. Contemporary full red grained morocco, spine with gilt rules, lettering and embellishment. Boards with double gilt border rules, foliar and floral embellishment, edge tooling, inner foliar curlicues. All edges gilt, (gilding a little faded in places), green silk ribbon bookmark. Small area of surface loss to lower board (see photo). Corner tips lightly rubbed. Occasional light spotting, mainly to free endpapers. Text and plates crisp and bright.
Guy Toussaint Julien Carron (1760-1821) born in Rennes. Educator, writer and philanthropist who founded a number of social and educational institutions: schools, libraries and pharmacies while in exile in England. Deported to Jersey (1792-1796), on the Bourbon Restoration in 1814, Carron returned to France and became head of the Institut de Marie - Thérèse.

Bookplate of Lord Stanley of Alderley. John Thomas Stanley (1766-1850), 7th Baronet and First Baron Stanley of Alderley of Alderley Park, Cheshire. He undertook learned expeditions to the cultural centres of Europe, becoming one of the first explorers of Iceland.

Sewn, with outer cover colourwashed yellow. A small closed nick or abrasion to the edge of the upper cover, a nice original chap book, not a reprint.

Spine in five compartments with raised bands. Gilt gothic cross ermine motifs to spine, and upper and lower boards. Inner gilt foliar swags. Gothic cross clasps. All edges red with gilt gothic cross ermine motifs to match the tooling on the binding. Marbled endpapers. Silk book mark. Joints cracked but firm, and corners a little rubbed. Light damp stain to base margin of a few pages.
