Description:
Printed for G. Walker, J. Akerman, E. Edwards; Thomas Tegg....... London. 1822. THREE VOLUMES. 8vo. (9.3 x 6 inches). Tall, wide margined copy with the pages untrimmed. Half titles present in all three volumes. Two leaves duplicated and incorrectly inserted into the end of volume two, namely 2 pages from the index which appears in volume 3 have been bound in in error, one where page 513/4 should be (easy to see how, both leaves share the signature Ll), the other at the end of the text where a blank should be, and the two leaves of Appendix are bound in the wrong order but complete. A neat previous owner name to the top of the title page in volume 3. Some foxing and offsetting of the text block to a few leaves in each volume, particularly the first pages of volume one, but overall a very good set. Finely bound in recent full antique speckled brown calf. Spines with five raised bands, the compartments decorated and ruled in blind. Red and green labels, ruled and lettered in gilt. Description:
James Hedderwick & Son. Glasgow. 1836. FIRST BRITISH EDITION. 8vo. (7.1 x 4.4 inches). 172pp, i (publishers advert). A very good, uncut copy in the publishers brown morocco grained cloth with printed paper label to the spine. Several gatherings unopened. A little chipping to the label but overall a very good clean copy of this uncommon First UK edition. --------- Channing (1780-1842) initially held a common American belief about the inferiority of African people and slaves and felt that that once freed, they would need overseers. The overseers (largely former slave masters) were necessary because the slaves would lapse into laziness. Furthermore, he did not join the abolitionist movement because he did not agree with their way of conducting themselves, and he felt that voluntary associations limited a person's autonomy. Therefore, he often chose to remain separate from organisations and reform movements. This middle position characterised his attitude about most questions, although his eloquence… Read More

There are several small neat pencil lines in the margins to some pages but these could be easily erased. Overall a clean set throughout. The books came to me with Library withdrawn stamps to the endpapers but these were removed when the books were rebound in the current bindings. Overall a nice presentation of this important work.

Description:
Macmillan and Co. Limited. London. 1935. TWO VOLUMES. Early reprints. Both are third impression reprints of the original 1930 edition. Previous owners name written neatly on the front free endpapers. A fine, bright pair, the pages crisp and clean. Original publishers blue cloth with gilt lettering and ruling to spines. The boards and spines are beautifully bright and clean having been protected by the publishers original brown paper, black printed dustwrappers. The wrappers are in near fine condition without any significant loss to edges but one crease to the front panel of volume two and a tiny hole (about 0.2 x 0.1 inch) to the spine of volume one, not affecting the lettering. Minor uniform darkening to both wrapper spines but overall a very near fine early set of this important work.
