New York: Edmund Jones, 1863. This is the annual city inspector's report for 1862, published in 1863, It compares the health of the city to other sities such as London and paris. The change of inhabitants in various areas has created unhealthy situations whereas they were formerly healthy. People were living in underground cellars and tenament houses. London had prohibitions against the cellars at this time. The book discusses the strikes by laborers and the causes, Public places were being used as dumping grounds, sale of street manure, slaughter houses in the city, livery stabes and their conditions. Filled with statistical tables and comments on same - this is an awesome look back to the 1860' in New york and in some cases London and Paris. Example: There was an epidemic of scarlet fever in the summer, there were over 104,000 immigrants from foreign ports.They compare New York to paris and london. Tbe book speaks of the high mortality rates in england at that time. It also refers to the lack of registration of births and deaths of the people of ireland so that accurate pictures of the movement of the Irish cannot be given. There are comments about street cleaning, the disgrace of the city markets, sewers, removal of dead animals, etc. An altogether fascinating book on thre city in 1860 - but especially so for its comments vs England. Montreal: Cambridge Corporation Limited This is one of the Royal Canadian Editions of the Beautiful Britain series of which 1000 were printed. This is a full Blue Moroccon Leather that has some shelf wear and wear and a tear to the upper spine.. There is a gilt dragon with a coat of arms on the front and TEG. There are 5 raised bands and gilt titles on the spine. Blue silk endpapers and 223 pages. Also listed are two more of the same series in the same binding - Beautiful; Britain - Oxford" and "Beautiful Britain - Vanished and Vanishing London". 75 illustrations are as bright as when they were published. Portions of the table of contents are: London as a piece of mosaic; the color of london, the city, great buildings, westminister, the river, great men, commonplace scenes - these are just a few of the chapter headings. Montreal: Cambridge Corporation Limited This is one of the rare Beautiful Britain Royal Canadian Edition versions of the A.C. Black series on Britain. of whiich only 1000 copies were published. This one in particular has beautiful illustrations many of whcih were painted by the author. He explored the older portions of London which have since been "improved" away. He hunted up old documents and carefully checked other resources for accuracy of his discriptions. 294 pages. Of the 75 illustrations - whcih are still as bright as when they were published- 60 of the represented buildings had disappeared at time of publication. His breakdown for the contents almost reads as an itinerary - Southwark; The city and east end; the ward of farringdon without; the inns of court and chancery; the western section. This one is in full blue moroccon leather with TEG, gilt emblems on the font along with the title, 5 raised bands with title in gilt on the spine. Thie book has 60 illustrations and 265 pages, This edition matches three others that are also listed, Beautiful Britain, Vanished and vanishing London and Beautiful Britain - Scenery of London. Some of the table of contents are: On entering oxford, the stones of oxford, undergrauates of the present and past, college servants of the present and the past, the oxford day, in a college garden, old oxford days, in praise of oxford. The author states that many of the pages came from a search into his own recollections of Oxford. along with his use of other research materials. There were only 1000 of these books issued. Montreal: Cambridge Corporation Limited This is #39/1000 of the Royal Canadian Limited Edition of this series. This book has the map - (I haven't found any others listed that included the map). The book is covered in a beautiful maroon leather with silk matching endpapers. The spine has faded but otherwise in beautiful condition. There is an engraved castle on the front cover TEG) There are 75 beautiful colored engravings of the Surrey countryside - colors are as fresh today as when originally published. A map of the Surrey area is attached in back - and is in as new condition. Priced according to the fading indicated on the spine. New York: John F. Trow, 1857. This book is in wraps that are fragile but attached and the pages have been hand cut. This was the address by Dr. John Francis at the dedication of the permanent house for the New York Historical Society. When delivered, the speech as noted by the author, was curtailed and was later published in its entirety. The address was entitled - New York during the last half century. Dr. Francis was eminently qualified to deliver this address as he was a long term member of the society and knew many of the prominent citizens of the time that he spoke about. It reads wonderfully -even today and the book also gives the proceedings of the dedication of that time of the library. New York: The MacMillian Company "Any retrospect of the civilization of the United States during the century...neglected,,,the influence of german culture on the higher artistic and intellectual life of the nation." This statement is from the introduction to the book and it is a scholary treatise on the subject that actually is a fascinating read. In addition there is a letter written and signed from the author to a Mr. LeRoy E. Kimball at New York Universitry - dated March 6, 1917. The previous owner noted in pencil on the botom of the letter that the author died in berlin, 8/2/1939. The Recipient, according to the internet, was the author of a piece on James Wilson of Vermont - america's first globe maker. Book is in very good condition although there is a damaged spot on the back cover. The letter is pasted on the inside cover with the bookplate of Kimball. . Signed by Author. Hard Cover. Very Good,. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

New York: H. L. Lindquist, 1935. This s a signed limited edition of Carl Junge's bookplates. There were 500 autograped copies of which this is no 142. It is also signed by the published as a presentation copy to George Ewing. There is an original Rockwell Kent bookplate designed for George Ewing on the inside front cover. Carl S. Junge was a famous bookplate artist from Chicago. Bookplates of james barrie, woodrow wilson, burton holmes, fannie and carl junge to name only a few are listed. Note that the front cover has some rubbing on the bottom right. I also have another listing of his handwritten diary from 1907 in which he writes of an art course he is taking in Paris. It is number 001679.. Signed by Author and Publisher. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Long.

Can be repaired = otherwise a beautiful full red leather book with gilt lettering a gilt illustrtion on front cover of a farmer and an indian with the eage on a globe wityh the symbol of the city with beavers and barrels. 381 pages with illustrations (95 pages are indicated). St Paul's Churchyard: J. Johnson, 1794. In the introduction, the author states: " You have now, my dear son, nearly finished an education which has been conducted upon a plan best adapted to the present state of things..." ...I say, ...for the education of youth can only be preparatory to the pursuits of man..." A fascinating study of the times (late 1700's) and the education and expectations of both young men and their fathers. The father goes on to advise his son about art, prejudice, bigotry, philosophy, religion, mental and bodily diseases, etc. Book is in original calf and is good for its age. A name is inscribed on frontispiece in brown ink. There is some foxing on the pages. 18th century edition. Second Edition. Full-Leather. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

New York: G&C Carvill, 1827. This is a book of a tour over a three year period to England, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, France and Italy. Two volumes in One. A full diary was kept from the day the author left Sandy Hook on 6/8/1825 to the author's return on May 6, 1827. He travelled with a friend to, Ireland, England, Scotland, France, Italy, Switzerland, etc. Everything is detailed - and picked up from the author's notes to a diary and finally publication. The previous owner a Mr. Charles M.Taintor wrote his name in 1851, 71 and 76 and places he was living at such as Shelbourne, Mass, , Glastonbury, Conn, etc. It is the beautiful brown ink script of the 19th century. His name (Charles M. Taintor) seems to match some geneological sites on the internet. Seems the name was one of the earliest settlers in New England. THe condition of the book is good - the binding is very worn (marbel and leather - torn on the spine) - but covered with a protective cover; foxing throughout.… Read More

Florence: Giulio Giannini & Son, 1923. This is a small booklet of 42 pages with some wonderfull illustrations and a great introduction of Sims. In it he mentions that Rossetti stated that Browning had an understanding and knowledge of early italian art that surpassed Ruskin's at the time. There are notes at the end of the poem itself. Browning expresses his love of the Renaissance period. Some have felt that this poem might reflect his own thoughts of his works being lost someday. The Booklet has a yellow and blue starburst decorated cover - with a tear at the top of the booklet. The interior is fine except for natural aging. A nice little find for Browning lovers or those who love Florence, italy.. Decorative Paper. Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

"The within pages, originally written for Valentine's Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York" have been brought together, and fifty copies printed for the use of friends of the writers.". This is what is written on the back of the title page. This is copy numbered 10. The unique aspect of this book is that one of the authors, Henry B. Dawson, signed that page and numbered the edition - plus on the facing page he wrote "The New Jersey Historical Society with the respects of Henry B. Dawson" - in beautiful 19th century script. Dawson was according to my research on the internet an immigrant from England who fell in love with american histroy. He became a newspaper editor and journalist but was known in the end as an historian. He wrote Battles of the United States by Sea and Land and an edition of the Federalist creating a controversy with James A. Hamilton and John Jay. London: Smith, Elder, and Co. The author was from London and came for a tour of the US and Canada. He travelled in the late 1850's from Boston to New Orleans and returned to New York via the slave states. He later returned to go onto Canada. His articles were published in the Illustrated London News. Some topics covered are New York and life in hotels, broadway, firemen. Boston, Newport, Niagara, Philadelphia, washington, interviews of Indians with their "Great Father". The Irish in America, The west, the mormons, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, the plantations. A great overall view of that part of America. The next part deals with his trip to Canada (Toronto, Quebec, montreal, etc. There are 10 colored/tinted illustrations - all in beautiful condition. Paris: Various, 1846. This is a unique beautiful leather and marble covered book that has three authors and three of their works bound together. The Publisher of The Trollope book (travels and Travelers) is A&W Galignani (Paris - 1846), Haliburton's - The Attache -or Sam Slick in England is Baudry's European Library - Paris 1843) and Washington Irving's Capt Bonneville is also Baudry's - 1837. There is a Bookplate of Sir H. Hervey Bruce Bart on the front cover. Research indicates that he was one of the Patrons/Benefactors of the first Belfast Musical Festival that occured on 10/19/1813. The book is covered in 3/4 brown leather - somewhat worn on the seam and marbled cloth which is worn and rubbed. There is some rubbing on corners and bottom.
