Cast in Bronze: French Sculpture from Renaissance to Revolution

By Bresc-Bautier, Genevieve, Guilhem Scherf, James David Draper, and Jane Bassett

Paris: Somogy Art Publishers, 2009. 1st . Hardcover. New/New. in shrinkwrap.
This is the catalogue of an exhibition held at the Muse´e du Louvre, Paris, October 22, 2008 - January 19, 2009, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, February 24 - May 24, 2009, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, June 30 - September 27, 2009. This magnificently illustrated book provides an overview of the bronze sculpture produced in France from the 16th to 18th centuries. Works by major sculptors such as Goujon, Pilon, Prieur, Anguier, Puget, Girardon, Desjardins, Coysevox, Le Lorrain, Bertrand, Caffieri, Pigalle, and Houdon represent a spectacular phase of French art and history ranging from the Renaissance through Neoclassicism up to the French Revolution. Essays by international art historians enlighten readers about the complex relationship between sculptors, founders, and chasers when creating bronze statues, which were usually a question of teamwork. This volume features famous as well as little-known works, previously unpublished documents, and studies of prestigious collections. Iconographical analyses and discussions of links to other arts will certainly make it a key reference work on bronzes.

Renaissance Bronzes from the Samuel H. Kress Collection: Reliefs, Plaquettes, Statuettes, Utensils and Mortars

By Pope-Hennessy, John

London: Phaidon Press, 1965. 1st . Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. light foxing to edges of text block, dust jacket with tiny loss of laminate at head and foot of spine.
The statuettes and plaquettes in the Samuel H. Kress Collection form one of the most distinguished groups of Renaissance bronzes to be found in any public or private collection. They incorporate the famous collection assembled during more than forty years by the French collector Gustave Dreyfus, which was acquired by the Kress Foundation in 1941 and was given to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in 1957. The 459 plaquettes offer an unrivaled survey of the small reliefs of Riccio, Moderno, Valerio Belli and other bronze sculptors, in examples of superb quality, and include major works by Alberti, Francesco di Giorgio and Peter Vischer the Younger. The 130 statuettes and utensils include figure statuettes, small animal bronzes inkstands, candlesticks, table bells and mortars. Of the 589 objects catalogued and reproduced in this volume, 523 are by Italian artists of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; the others come in the main from the Netherlands, France and Germany. All the statuettes and plaquettes in the Kress Collection are illustrated in this volume, for the most part in their original sizes. With 616 illustrations.

Giambologna: The Complete Sculpture

By Avery, Charles

Mt. Kisco, NY: Moyer Bell Ltd, 1987. 1st . Hardcover. Very Good/Fine. dampstain to boards near spine, not affecting interior. Giambologna (1529-1608) was the greatest sculptor of the age of Mannerism, imposing his distinctive and seductive style on the half-century between the death of Michelangelo in 1564 and the emergence of Bernini. Through the distribution of his bronze statuettes, his influence spread throughout Europe. Charles Avery's major new critical study of Giambologna is the first full-scale monograph to be published in any language for many years, thus filling a notable gap in the literature on Italian art and European sculpture. The author deals with the artist's Flemish background, his career in Italy, the development of his style, his technique and working methods, and his entire oeuvre, with separate chapters on marble statuary, bronze statuettes, devotional and narrative works, portraits and animal sculpture, fountains and equestrian monuments. Many critical aspects of Giambologna's work are discussed, including his contribution to Mannerism and his place in the wider European tradition. The book concludes with a summary catalogue of all Giambologna's known works. The principal photographs have been specially taken by David Finn, internationally recognized for his outstanding work as a photographer of sculpture. They give a new insight into Giambologna's imaginative powers and technical virtuosity. With 342 illustrations, 16 in color.
