Description:
Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1949. A small number of illustrations on tinted paper, octavo, pp xxxii, 302, very clean internally, green cloth very slightly marked, the dustwrapper is a little worn and foxed, with several small pieces missing on the margins, a slightly larger peice missing from the rear cover and a small closed tear on the front, but now nicely protected in a removable clear cover. ["David was truly a superb naturalist, with extensive knowledge in geology, mineralogy, ornithology, zoology, and botany. He also had in his character an innate respect for people and their culture, no matter how foreign they may have seemed to him. It was this, and his gentle manner that allowed him to travel to regions of China where strangers, let alone foreigners, were rarely made to feel welcome. His early collections were so much more than expected - the quality and number of specimens was overwhelming, but it was the careful documentation that made his contributions to the Museum…

Signed by both editors on the title page, and also by two other contrib utors. [ In 1712, English naturalist Mark Catesby (16831749) crossed the Atlantic to Virginia. After a seven-year stay, he returned to England with paintings of plants and animals he had studied. They sufficiently impressed other naturalists that in 1722 several Fellows of the Royal Society sponsored his return to North America. There Catesby catalogued the flora and fauna of the Carolinas and the Bahamas by gathering seeds and specimens, compiling notes, and making watercolour sketches. Going home to England after five years, he began the twenty-year task of writing, etching, and publishing his monumental The Natural History of Carolina,…

From the library of the botanist and Director of Kew Gardens, W.B. Turrill, with his faint signature on the upper cover. [Polak studied Medicine in Prague and Vienna. He was one of the six Austrian teachers invited by Amir Kabir, the Persian chief minister, as the instructors of Dar ul-Fonun, the first modern higher education institution in Iran. By his own account, he entered Iran on 24 November 1851, before the inauguration of the Dar ul-Fonun. From 1851 to 1860, he taught medicine at Dar ul-Fonun. In the beginning, he taught in French and used a translator. Soon, the incompetence of the translators motivated him to learn Persian. He learned Persian in six months, and then taught his course in Persian. In 1885, he funded Otto Stapf, a Viennese botanist, to undertake a botanical expedition to South- and Western Persia. This led to…
