[The John Murray Expedition of 1933-1934 ‘pioneered bilateral relations in the field of oceanography, at a time when the Law of the Sea was not even an embryonic concept’ (Aleem & Morcos, 1984). Funded by a £20,000 bequest from oceanographer, John Murray, this expedition was a collaboration between Britain and Egypt. Aboard HEMS Mabahiss, British zoologist Lt. Col. Dr R.B. London: W.H. Allen & Co., 1884. New edition. Illustrated, small octavo, pp xvi, 316, all edges gilt, names removed from half title, slight age-toning, otherwise clean and sound internally, decorated cloth gilt, a little worn and rubbed, the spine slightly pulled at the head and foot. [John Ellor Taylor was born at Levenshulme, near Manchester, in 1837. He received no education except some desultory instruction at a school held in the Wesleyan chapel, which he supplemented by private study. About 1850 he obtained a situation as store-boy at the locomotive works of the London and North-Western railway at Longsight. Two years later he was bound apprentice as a fitter and turner at the same works. From 1858 onwards Taylor was a popular lecturer on science. In conjunction with John Gunn he established the Norwich Geological Society in 1864, and founded the Science Gossip Club (Norwich) in 1870. He was elected a fellow of the Geological Society in 1869, and a fellow of the Linnean Society in June 1873.… Read More

In 1948, Davidson joined the Foreign Office and served in diplomatic posts in Washington, Tunis, Brussels, Cairo, the Hague; from 1973 to 1975, he was ambassador to Laos. While living in Tunis, his wife asked him to look for a cookbook on fish because she did not recognize any of the local varieties. Not being able to find one he wrote one himself. There are particularly extensive series of lagoons - areas of salt or brackish water separated from the adjacent sea by a low-lying sand or shingle barrier - along the eastern and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the USA, in Mexico itself, in Brazil, West Africa, Natal, southern and eastern India, south-west and south-east Australia, Alaska, Siberia and around the shores of the Mediterranean, southern Baltic, Black and Caspian Seas. In several of these areas they support important fisheries. Cambridge University Press, 1983. Illustrated, quarto, pp viii, 290, a small letter stamped on the title page, otherwise very clean internally, pictorial boards rubbed and a little worn. Still a good sound copy. [The book traces the ways in which terrestrial animals have evolved from aquatic ancestors and discusses the means by which they are adapted to life on land. The most important physiological adaptations are those involving salt and water balance, the excretion of nitrogen, reproductive mechanisms and the sense organ and these are given priority. Evidence from fossil history is combined with that from the ecology and physiology of present-day species to assess the probable routes along which various evolutionary lines had moved on to land. Individual chapters are concerned with specific animal groups and emphasis is placed on comparisons of physiological mechanisms between closely related animals before attempting wider generalisations. The book closes with a brief account of the… Read More

Description:
London: The Ray Society, 1991. Illustrated, large quarto, pp 468, a very good copy in dustwrapper, virtually as new. [ Copepods are small crustaceans that have colonised virtually every aquatic habitat from the deep-sea floor to the high Himalayas. They are by far the dominant animal group in marine plankton and often in freshwater plankton also. They are abundant both on and in marine sediments from the intertidal zone to the abyss and can be found in damp terrestrial habitats in large numbers. The variety of freeliving forms is only part of the copepod success story since copepods have become associates or parasites of virtually every animal phylum from sponges and cnidarians up to chordate, including fish and mammals. This volume examines in detail the evolutionary pathways that generated this amazing diversity. It contains over 900 individual drawings and 43 plates of black and white photographs, the great majority illustrating the basic form of each of the ten recognised orders of copepods.… Read More

Description:
Cambridge University Press, 1999. Large 8vo, pp xii, 291, pictorial boards, an extremely good copy indeed. [Environmental degradation in the Aral Sea basin has been a touchstone for increasing public awareness of environmental issues. The Aral crisis has been touted as a 'quiet Chernobyl' and as one of the worst human-made environmental catastrophes of the twentieth century. This multidisciplinary 1999 book comprehensively describes the slow onset of low grade but incremental changes (i.e. creeping environmental change) which affected the region and its peoples. Through a set of case studies, it describes how the region's decision-makers allowed these changes to grow into an environmental and societal nightmare. It outlines many lessons to be learned for other areas undergoing detrimental creeping environmental change, and provides an important example of how to approach such disasters for students and researchers of environmental studies, global change, political science and history.].… Read More

Description:
New York: Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers, 2003. Illustrated, octavo, pp xii, 240, pictorial boards, and extremely good copy. [Easter Island, a World Heritage Site is still, after over 50 years since Thor Heyerdahl's work on the island, a fascinating area to explore and learn about a culture that has only remnants remaining, while documenting a marine ecology still mostly unknown. This book presents the research results from three years of interdisciplinary expeditions to Easter Island. The primary objectives were to investigate the effects of human population growth on the ecology of the island and to discover whether any dramatic climatic changes such as a prolonged El Niño could have disrupted the island's fragile ecosystem. The interdisciplinary scientific team were mainly researching the paleontology, archaeology, climatology, and geophysics of the island. This book now brings together the results of the three expeditions, identifies new areas of research, and hopefully will… Read More
