A very rare collection of 31 original watercolours by or probably after William Gilpin In early 19th C half calf, over worn marbled boards, some gilt tooling, corners & edge bumped & worn. Spine, decorative gilt tooling, gilt titles to black calf label, edges bumped & worn with some loss. Internally, blue marbled endpapers, 31 leaves of original watercolours, (18 of which are in full colour, remainder in pen and ink gray/black or sepia), (29 being of a topographical nature, with the remaining 2 being coloured armourial? plus a few leaves of MS text copied from Pennant's Tours. The water colours are nearly all ovals, mostly with ms. captions. 6 are of Welsh subjects. There are several un-captioned which could be anywhere. Neatly re-backed retaining the original spine, new silk ties, 1889 book label to fpd, ink note Sketches by Hohn Varley Collated by E Sterry to ffep, Hartland Library presentation label from AG Hartland to verso ffep. Of most interest are four sheets of drawings of portrait heads, which rather than preparatory sketches for finished pictures are more likely to be demonstrations of Varley's interest in visionary images and astrological influences on appearance. In 1818 William Linnell introduced Varley to William Blake and they remained firm friends until Blake's death. Internally, title, dedication, preface, map (indicating route), index, followed by 82 pages (18 Chapters) of neat, legible copperplate script, detailing a journey by 2 young gentlemen through North Wales in 1872, and includes a visit to the Eisteddfod, crease to front cover. Includes anecdotes about the differences between Protestantism and Roman Catholicism, rural life, poverty and travel. The author was the father of the suffragette Grace Chappelow (1884-1971). Two engraved portraits, one a steel engraving dated 1819 (an early version of the frontispiece portrait to The Memoir), and the other a full-length depiction of Jones by AB Burt (miniature painter, Chester), hand coloured and dated May 30th., 1823; a printed broadside titled Craniology. Outlines of the Life of Richard Roberts Jones which advertises the Burt engravings; three manuscript fragments: one in Greek headed The Order of Harps, eight small octavo pages with a drawing of a Harp on the final page, a transcription of the Lord's Prayer in three languages and a note in Greek signed by Jones dated February 3rd, 1824. All housed in a Fine custom box in black half morocco over blue marbled boards, gilt tooling, gilt title & tooling to morocco label on upper board, gilt tooling & titles to spine. (Box 403*296 mm).
