The Cult of Desire: An Interpretation of Erotic Sculpture of India

By Lal, Kanwar

DeLhi: Asia Press, 1966. Book. Illus. by Lal, Darshan, Photographer. Very Good +. Cloth. First Edition Stated.. 84 pp. essay, 19 pp. of notes on plates, 126 b&w glossy plates of sculptures. Red khadi-type cloth shows very little age. Dust jacket has some crinkling and soil on edges. Text is clean, very faint foxing on edges of endpapers. No markings. Scarce first edition. An Indian art specialist provides a general introduction to India's erotic temple sculptures, found mainly in middle and southern India. (Khajuraho, Konarek, Bhubaneshwar) Excellent photos give close-up details that an on-site visitor might miss because of poor lighting, weather erosion and elevated locations within temples. Excellent notes on the individual plates give the Hindu and Buddhist folklore and philosophy that inspired the graphic images, including fellatio, cunnilingus, bestiality and group sex. The essay is written in typical stilted British English found in Indian academia, but it is readable and not overly arcane. Understandable for westerners who may know little or nothing about eastern religions. Lal takes the view that the sculptures essentially convey a spiritual rather than an aphrodisiac message. He states: ".All these poses represent the various stages of sadhana -- of striving toward the spiiritual goal of release and of mergilng into the infinite." Size: 8vo -- 9.5 In Tall.
