Some wear to the blue paper spine, with some of it worn completely away, some creasing and small tears to back cover, but otherwise a good, internally clean and tight copy of this soft-cover book. Originally published in 1873, this is a slightly later, undated edition but with advert inside front cover for Berkshire Life Insurance company dated 1878. The author was one Wallace Bruce (1844-1914) who wrote several other similar guidebooks and also some slim poetry collections. A guide to places of interest along the Hudson River from New York to Albany. Folding map at rear of book has a tear about halfway along the top fold, but otherwise still whole. 177pp, b&w illustrations, folding map in colour.. Paperback. Deals with Peter Munuit, who founded the first permanent European settlement in Delaware in 1638 when working for the Swedish crown, and with his ship the Kalmar Nyckel, which made four voyages across the Atlantic to the new colony, bringing new settlers and supplies. Minuit was drowned in the Caribbean in 1638, and the Kalmar Nyckel was sold in 1651. Originally published in March 1990, this is a second printing from March 2007. 225pp, 16pp b&w illustrations.. Originally published in French in 2001, this is the first English-language edition, translated by Mary E Brennan-Ricard. A biography of Pierre-Esprit Radisson, who came to New France (now Quebec) in 1651. He lived among the Mohawk Indians for a year as a young man, returning to the French and then travelling and trading around the Lake Superior area and later to Hudsons Bay.
