Petya and His Dog

By Nechaev, Vadim Viktorovich; Bell, Anthea

Kestrel Books, 1975. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 5.25" x 8.0. Colbert, Anthony. H/B 123 pages, condition is very good, minor edge wear to the DJ, which has been price clipped. On his way home from school one day, Petya finds a stray dog in his village and befriends him, naming him Pilagan. But he brings trouble for Petya who is one of the Tungus people, living on the island of Sakhalin off the Russian coast. Then Petya lends the dog to his neighbour for a long sledge trek, Pilagan refuses to fight when the team is attacked by wolves. The village Elders decree that the dog must be killed because he is part wolf. As if sensing his fate, Pilagan slips away from the village and Petya, determined to keep him, sets off to look for Pilagan in his school holidays. His search takes him all over the island, and he meets many different people: Katkov at the geophysical station, Klenov the animal trainer, Olga Pavlovna Sinizina with her beautiful garden, and Captain Mikhailovski and the crew of the Polar Line aircraft. All of these people have met Pilagan, but the dog would not stay with them. At last Petya finds Pilagan and takes him home once again to his village to challenge the Elders' decision. The only way he can do this is in the traditional sledge race at the Bear Festival. . . Vadim Netchayev draws a fascinating picture of life on the island of Sakhalin, poised between Russia and Japan, between ancient customs and superstitions and modern technology. Children will enjoy this exciting story of a boy and his dog set in a little known part of the world, strikingly illustrated by Anthony Colbert.

Jane of Gowlands

By Anne Hepple

Hutchinson, 1000. Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. h/b 208 pages, condition is very good, the DJ has been price clipped and has some wear. Faithful, to her beloved Borders, Anne Hepple lays the scenes of her latest book, Jane of Gowlands, in the hilly country where the Cheviots and Lammermuirs meet. The time is just after the late wars which have wiped out practically all of the Gow family except the fragile but stubborn Jane, her Grandfather, the old book-seller, and her wicked and miserly Grand-aunt, Janet. Both the old people are anxious that Jane should marry a Walter Gow of another branch, but Jane, as a little stubborn child, has fallen in love with a boy a few years older than herself when staying in the hills to recuperate after an illness. He is the son of "a noble but impoverished family" and the affair between the young things is just laughed at and then taken very seriously indeed and the two forcibly parted. Years pass but Jane is one of those faithful beings that nothing can change, her heart is broken over and over again not only through circumstances but unwittingly by Keith, her lover. Through laughter and tears, however, Jane fights her way and Keith comes into his own at last and then - well we see what we shall see!
