The book includes a Foreword by Christopher Morley. This First Edition Thus has the 1937 date on the copyright page, as well as on the Title Page in Roman Numerals. Random House did not state First Edition on its earlier books until 30 years later, but only made note of subsequent printings. This particularly decorative volume was part of Doubleday-Doran's "Malay Edition," which had uniform bindings of Conrad's various writings and was published four years after the author's death. There is only light shelf wear to the spine tips and corners. This two-volume set is Number 23 and precedes the first trade edition. Archibald Henderson was a close friend and companion of George Bernard Shaw for more than 29 years when this mammoth 1932 biography was published. The biography was authorized by Shaw, who carefully went over the manuscript. Indeed, this is probably the most complete and accurate representation of all aspects of Shaw's life, art, politics, and philosophy published before or since. Fisher Unwin in London from the early 1890s through the early 1900s. The Marlowe volume contains a frontis illustration. The collection was edited by Havelock Ellis and includes a Marlowe biography by Ellis as well, with an Introduction by J.A. Symonds. The plays include Tambulaine the Great (in two parts), The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, The Jew of Malta, and Edward the Second. An Appendix includes relevant items, such as a short biography of Edward Alleyn, who performed in many of Marlowe's plays. This 1899 edition was unauthorized, and the first authorized edition appeared a few years later. It's an ex-library copy with library bookplate, card holder, number on spine, and take-out sheet, but no nasty discard stamps. It has dark blue cloth covers, with bright die-stamped gilt lettering on the front panel and spine. The spine tips and corners are rubbed and frayed. The binding is secure, and the text pages are for the most part clean and bright. There is a circular tear on the front free endpaper that has been repaired.
