Claremont: Blumenfeld and Associates, 1991. First Edition. Soft cover. Fine. Complete series of printed and stapled newsletters, bi-monthly beginning in 1991 and ending abruptly in 1998 (47 issues). Each newsletter is up to 20pp long and nicely printed on quality paper. Blumenfeld was, as I remember, and avid collector of the best books in several Western Americana fields, exploration, cattle trade, outlaws, fur trade, etc., and wrote with knowledge, if not academic authority. In these newsletters he expounds on hundreds of Western books and cites them bibliographically, noting the several great bibliographies for each subject. I (your bookseller) subscribed to this newsletter from the beginning and kept it up to end. Blumenfeld noted that he was going to go out with a bang, but after the fifth newsletter of 1998 he "disappeared." "A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Duke University 1944." Quarto clothbound carbon copy with gilt title. 143pp. In this thesis, the author explains that the role of the female black domestic servant in the South is under attack and explains why. Because of the war, black men who did not go into the military were finding betting paying jobs at home and their wives did not need their domestic jobs. Among the other reasons was the purported, but false and widely circulating rumor of "Eleanor Clubs, named after Eleanor Roosevelt. The assertion was that Mrs. Roosevelt was encouraging black domestics to demand higher wages or quit their jobs, and the supposed motto was "a white woman in every kitchen by Christmas." A detailed presentation of the condition on Indian reservations and agencies in the West. There is a huge amount of information in this report on all kinds of conditions and situations Indian delegations, crime, livestock, and much more. This was the period of time when the Grant Administration placed a lot of faith in the churches to represent the federal government on the reservations. Ely Parker, a Seneca, had been appointed Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Conditions were mostly reported in a promising way, until it began to unravel. Wear to the corners, but a good copy with hinges sound.

N. 142, 56th Congress, 2nd Session. 39pp. "A report from the Secretary of State, with Accompanying Papers, in Relation to the Lynching, in LaSalle County, Tex., on October 5, 1895, of Florentino Suaste, a Mexican Citizen." The secretary, "out of humane consideration and without reference to the question of liability of the Government of the United States, of the sum of $2,000, to be paid by the Secretary of State to the Government of Mexico, and by that Government distributed to the heirs of the above-mentioned Florentino Suaste." As stated, this is a report of the case and the recommendations. It contains many details of associated crimes. This was during the William McKinley administration. Good. Scarce.

Most of the 63 issues are from the 1980s and are staple bound in colored quarto wraps; a dozen or so are sheets stapled. The bibliographical information in these catalogues is superb. Notation in pen on front cover corners as to month/year of arrival, and some additional notations. Vg to fine.
