An Artist in Conservation

By David Shepherd

Singapore: David & Charles, 1993. Large and heavy book, 112pp.No marks, tears or other defects. This is a collection of some of the best of David Shepherd's wildlife art. He is known internationally as an artist and deeply committed conservationist and first learnt about Africa from books about the big game hunters of the 1930s. His first experience of the real Africa was when he attempted unsuccessfully to become a game warden in Kenya. Returning to England he took up painting, initially specializing in aviation art. He was then commissioned by the Royal Air Force to do two paintings in Kenya of elephants, and this was the beginning of his career as a wildlife painter. In the introductory text, David tells of his many visits to Africa and India, the people and animals he met and the friends he made. There are also descriptions of trips he made to take photographs of game.. 2nd. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Art.

The Birds of South America: Volume 1: The Oscine Passerines

By Robert S. Ridgely; Tudor Guy

Austin, TX: University of Texas Press, 1989. Thickand heavy book. including bibliography and index. Although South American birds elicit much popular and scientific interest, they have never been completely or satisfactorily described and cataloged in a single, published source. The Birds of South America, projected to be a four-volume work, thus fills a critical void. Starting from a museum approach, the authors have examined specimens of each subspecies, comparing them visually and trying to discern the patterns in their plumage variation, both intra- and inter-specifically. They take a new look at bird systematics, reassessing relationships in light of new information. Perhaps most important, they combine this review and analysis with extensive field observations to give an accurate, incisive portrait of the birds in nature.. 1st. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Animals.
