This history is the digital edition of a two-volume set of books with a total of 1034 pages by John Newton Harman, Sr., originally published in 1922 and 1925. It consists of two text files (3.6 Mb) in doc format and 26 high-resolution image files (11.4 Mb) in gif and jpg format, digitized in 2008 and issued on CD-Rom. The first volume, 444 pages, chronicles the history of the county to 1853. The second volume, 590 pages, continues the history through 1922. The work consists mainly of extracts from the official records of the County and its various towns and villages. In addition, the first volume includes Judge Lyman Chalkley's essay, "Before the Gates of the Wilderness Road," originally published in the Virginia Historical Magazine (20 pages), and George W. L. The first volume cover has a small puncture near the top edge of the spine; the second volume is ex-library. One index page of Volume I is torn out but included. Minor toning and some minor (maybe even helpful) marginal notions in pen and pencil. In addition to marriage records, court records, church records, school records, and military rosters, the publication contains genealogical information as shown in wills and deeds. This history is the digital edition of a book with xv + 412 pages (including 18 pages of index) by Henry S. Burrage, originally published in 1914. It consists of 2 text files (1.2Mb) in doc format and 26 image files (3.5Mb) in jpg and gif formats, digitized in 2009 and issued on CD-Rom. A literate, judicious, well-reasoned, and thoroughly documented account by the Maine State Historian, from the earliest explorations and settlements in Maine to the incorporation of the province as a part of Massachusetts.

Tightly bound, except back strip has torn away from boards, which remain firmly attached to the book block. Beautifully marbleized end papers and paper edges; interior is clean, bright.

A volume in Praeger's Ancient Peoples and Places series. This volume is unused and would probably have been rated "as new" but for the following: dust jacket is priced clipped, and both dust jacket and cover, front and rear, have what appears to be "machine" damage (as if mangled by some kind of automated packing equipment, etc.). The damage, however apparent, does not detract significantly from the book's aesthetic appeal.

Comprising historical and descriptive sketches of each place, an alphabetical list of inhabitants, their business and residence, a list of the municipal officers, every information relative to the public offices and officers, churches, associations and institutions, shipping, steamboats, stages, etc., also a list of the officers of the government of Ohio, a table of foreign coins and currencies, and a variety of other useful information. Text is complete, but worn; cover is intact, but attached and repaired with tape. Some corner chipping, extending into the first two or three first pages, upper right hand corner. Library markings on covers and end papers. Believed to be a first edition (having found no evidence to the contrary).

This new edition, published on a USB Flash Drive (credit card style), contains two text files in DOC format (2.1 Mb) for MAC or PC and most current word processing programs: 682 pages of text (marriage records), grouped by county and town, and a new, consolidated index of forty pages.
A classic compendium, originally published in seven volumes, 1897 to 1906, it contains marriage records of various Congregational (and a few Episcopalian) churches in Connecticut. Bailey clearly recognized the importance of transcribing records that were quickly disappearing and making the transcriptions available to genealogical researchers throughout the world. For this, we owe him our gratitude.
However, as originally published – and lately republished verbatim in PDF format by others – the work is extremely difficult to use. The material for each of the seven volumes seems to have been gathered haphazardly and each volume has its own index, which is only vaguely… Read More
