Description:
Washington, D. C.: Various publishers, 1934. Five publications related to James Brown Scott (1866-1943), an authority on international law, who became involved with Doris Stevens and the National Woman's Party during the late 1920s. As the NWP expanded its scope to include an international recognition of equal rights for women, Scott, who'd already worked in the international peace movement, was promulgating a new standard of nationalism that included "the adoption of nationality rules based on full individual equality" (Amorosa, p. 286). The publications below focus on this intersection and at least two of them were originally published in "Equal Rights," the National Woman's Party's magazine. Scott became Doris Stevens' law teacher and mentor at Columbia and they maintained a very close working relationship in the fight for equal rights. (For the best account of Scott's involvement with the NWP, Paolo Amorosa, Rewriting the History of the Law of Nations: How James Brown Scott Made Francisco de… Read More

Description:
[Washington, D. C.?]: [National Woman's Party?], 1929. A scarce pamphlet reprinting a speech made by influential suffragist and women's rights advocate Doris Stevens at a banquet of the Institut de Droit International held at Briarcliff Lodge on Columbus Day, 1929. In her speech, Stevens compares the lives of Hatshepsut, the first Egyptian Queen, whose jealous husband tried to erase her memory upon her death with Queen Isabella of Castile, who working in equality with her husband, King Ferdinand, financed Columbus' expedition and changed the course of history. Stevens' speech complimented that of her law teacher and mentor, James Scott Brown, who spoke on "The Discovery of America and Its Influence on International Law" (see, Amorosa, Rewriting the History of the Law of Nations: How James Brown Scott Made Francisco de Vitoria the Founder of International Law, p. 289). Although Stevens never finished a law degree, she gave her speech as the newly appointed, and first female, secretary of the Institut… Read More

Description:
Atlantic City, New Jersey: Central Studios, 1941. A three-and-a-half foot panoramic photograph taken at the Golden Jubilee Triennial of General Federation of Women's Clubs, which was held 19-24 May 1941 in Atlantic City, New Jersey at the Dennis Hotel. Although the organization celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its founding on April 24, 1940, it was decided to mark the occasion at their convention the following year. The program for this convention was "developed around two central ideas - a review of our past accomplishments and a forecast of the opportunities and responsibilities ahead" (from a "call to convention" letter). A "New York Times" article from May 19, 1941 reports: "Pageantry provided the highlight here tonight at the opening of the golden jubilee celebration of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Quaint bonnets and hoop skirts, lace mitts and Paisley shawls were prominent in the stately processional that opened the fiftieth annual meeting in Convention Hall, dedicated to the… Read More

An original 5" x 7" publicity photograph of Anita Pollitzer, Chairman of the New York City Committee, National Woman's Party and the newly elected National Chairman of the National Woman's Party. Pollitzer, a Charleston-born Jew, was an active suffragette who was instrumental in the passage of the 19th Amendment. She served as NWP Chairman from 1945-49. She also "discovered" Georgia O'Keefe in 1915 by giving some charcoal drawings O'Keefe had sent her to Alfred Stieglitz at his 291 Gallery in NYC. Stieglitz exhibited 10 of her paintings in early 1916 and later married O'Keefe. Pollitzer and O'Keefe remained friends for the duration of their lives and late in her life Pollitzer wrote A Woman on Paper: Georgia O'Keefe, which included letters between the two, and was published posthumously in 1988 (Wikipedia).
