Description:
New York City: Friends of the American Lincoln Brigade, 1938. The second (and final) issue of this short-lived quarterly magazine issued by the Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, which was edited by Friends chairman David McKelvy White who was a teacher at Brooklyn College before going to fight with the Republicans in Spain. This issue notable for Ernest Hemingway's short tribute to Spanish artist Luis Quintanilla. Hemingway was a journalist in Spain during the war where he wrote his only play, The Fifth Column. Other content includes Dorothy Parker's article, "Soldiers of the Republic," as well as articles by David McKelvy White, Louis Fischer, Francis J. Gorman, Grace Freed, Lini Fuhr, Herb Hunter, & Milly Bennett; poetry by Sam Kornblatt & Michael Quin; a Friends financial statement; and letters from Spain. New York: The America Press, 1939. An expose of the "lift the embargo" movement, which the author contends was organized by six Communist Front organizations: Lawyers Committee on American Relations with Spain, Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, Confederated Spanish Societies, American Friends of Spanish Democracy, American League for Peace and Democracy and North American Committee to Aid Spanish Democracy. Hinkel provides profiles of each of the organizations, including information on some of their high profile members. Published by the Catholic America Press, Hinkel, a Colonel and veteran newspaperman, was later affiliated with Notre Dame. Later reprinted in 1980 by the Harvard College Library. Stapled, illustrated yellow wrappers (8" x 4 ") printed in black and red, 16 p. Some minor splitting along the spine, light wear to wrappers, but VG overall. Just under a dozen copies in OCLC.

Description:
Caracas: F.I.J.L., 1962. First edition. A small format anti-Franco booklet written by the "Marco Polo of Anarchism," Germinal Gracia, writing under one of his pseudonyms. Gracia presents an objective analysis of Spain under the Franco regime to demonstrate the situation for the student, immigrant, worker, and peasant. As a teenager Gracia (1919-1991) fought as a member of the C.N.T.-F.A.I. during the Spanish Civil War and continued his anti-Franco activities from Spain & France in the 1940s. He moved to Venezuela in 1948 and became a peripatetic writer issuing dozens of booklets and periodicals under a variety of pseudonyms. He remained a lifelong anarchist. [Chicago?]: [Solidarity Bookshop?], 1973. A two-sided poster celebrating the life of the famed anarchist militant Buenaventura Durruti. Durruti was a CNT-FAI leader who was killed in Madrid under disputed circumstances on Nov. 20, 1936. A reported half a million people attended his funeral. The recto features a black & white image of Durruti with the Manifesto of the Durruti Column. The manifesto was issued following his death and avowed: "Comrades of the Durruti Column! Let us avenge his broken life. We must carry his name through fascist Spain and it shall mean death to our enemies!" Hours after Durruti's death, CNT-FAI militants killed 52 policemen held captive in a monastery. The verso features two essays memorializing Durruti's life and leadership: "Durruti-Anarchist" written by his comrade H.
