Document issued by five Queens activists, mostly affiliated with SDS or Progressive Labor, protesting the SMC as dominated by Du Bois Club and YSA members, and urging the reader to "resist 'the resistance.'" Description:
Berkeley: The Berkeley Barb, 1966. Newspaper. 12p., folded tabloid, lightly toned, illus., very good. Berkeley Barb was the longest lasting Berkeley underground paper. Various free speech uproars in this issue: George Lincoln Rockwell and the American Nazi Party head a rally at Civic Center in San Francisco which was met with eggs and tomatoes from a hostile crowd of SDS, YSA, PL, DuBois Club members among others. Recounting of the Barb's travails in trying to sell the Barb on campus at UC. The Folk Scene column is devoted to the decidedly non-folk Yardbirds' loudly amped show at the Fillmore, mulling over a new electric hippy music "struggling to burst forth and take over." Short news article about panel discussion on "Your Child and the Growing Years" at UC Med Center quotes one Lewis Durham of Glide Foundation about how parents sharing acid trips with their children can be instructive. Article speculating on whether Stokely Carmichael of SNCC will speak or not at an upcoming conference on Black… Read More

Description:
Berkeley: Bullshit & Society, 1969. Pamphlet. 58p., 8.5x11 inches, mimeographed journal, stapled in upper left corner, some rust at the staple, otherwise very good condition. First and (apparently) only issue of a journal produced by the Radical Caucus of the UC Berkeley History Dept. It reprints Jerry Farber's "The Student as Nigger," "They Teach Us Alienation" by James O'Connor, Viennese painter Friedereich Hundertwasser's "Architecture Boycott Manifesto," "Fat-Cat Sociology" by Martin Nicolaus, and Cuban novelist Edmundo Desnoes' "The Secret Weapons." More significantly the issue also features a lengthy debate between PL and non-PL factions of SDS at UC Berkeley, along with a response by David Negus, and an account by past president of SDS Carl Oglesby of liberal overtures by Businessmen's International to SDS (via Oglesby), along with a reply by Andrew Levine of Columbia SDS. This would appear to have been published in early 1969, not the following winter.
