Description:
Providence: printed for the author, 1833. 144p., two wood-engravings on blue paper precede the title page, original boards with new spine and corners (perfunctory binder's tape job) and library endpapers, ex library with external labels, first edition. "This earliest known antifactory poem alternates between sections of rhyming couplets of iambic tetrameters and sections of heroic couplets. The strident critique of the factory system opening the poem is written in balladic four-stress lines. The poem's speaker laments the factory's departure from Revolutionary ideals of freedom and equality, as well as the consequent ignorance and suffering." *Ranta no. 367.
