Description:
Tulsa, OK: Christian Crusade, 1979. Newspaper. One hundred and sixty-three issues of the anti-Communist religious newspaper, evenly toned with horizontal fold, address labels, otherwise generally very good. Issues present are Vol. 11 No. 20; Vol. 12 Nos. 27-50, 52; Vol. 13 Nos. 1-31, 33-35, 37-52; Vol. 14 Nos. 1-52; Vol. 15 Nos. 1-30; Vol. 20 Nos. 15, 16; Vol. 26 Nos. 5-7. By this point, Hargis had moved beyond classic Red Scare rhetoric to address issues such as abortion and other culture war topics (though still fixated to the Russian and Chinese threat; early issues from this group criticize Nixon's outreach to China). Hargis was one of the most popular right-wing preachers of his heyday, but his career withered after accusations of sexual impropriety with choir singers (many of them male, despite the Reverend's lamentations about the "abomination of homosexuality"). In 1976, Time published an article titled "The Sins of Billy James," bringing the scandal to national attention. An unforgettable… Read More

Issues present are Vol. 10 No. 1, 5, 8, 9; Vol. 12 No. 5-7, 9-12; Vol. 13 No. 1-7; Vol. 18 No. 8-11 (two different issues numbered 11); Vol. 19 No. 1-9, 11, 12; Vol. 20 No. 1, 3-6, 7-12 (8 and 9 are a double issue); Vol. 21 No. 1, 3-9 (8 and 9 are a combined double issue). Also included are eleven leaflets and letters to subscribers on various themes, with penciled notes such as "Right wing and anti communist." Classic Red Scare rhetoric about godless commies and their breakdown of the American Way. Hargis was one of the most popular right-wing preachers of his heyday, but his career withered after accusations of sexual impropriety with choir singers (many of them male, despite the Reverend's lamentations about the "abomination of homosexuality"). Description:
Long Beach: Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, 1983. Ephemera. A hefty trove of mailers, 8.5x11 inches, generally very good but for fold creases. Most are unnumbered, bearing only dates; rather than list hundreds of dates here, we would be happy to check against any list you might provide. The main concentration of issues are from the late 1960s to the 1970s. Earlier issues combine the function of fundraising and reporting on "research" into various communist schemes. As the reportage became more voluminous, it was thought that the fundraising portion of the newsletter was unseemly, so from October 1969 onward, the fundraising section of each newsletter was separated out as a distinct dated leaflet, generally a single page; the 8-page newsletter itself (which was the part sent to libraries, etc.) addressed subjects ranging from the Indonesian mass killings of communists to the insidious influences of the Black Panther Party. Also included are 38 issues of the group's News Letter, in various formats,… Read More
