Marbled endpapers. The corners of the covers are rubbed & chipped. There is a large piece out of the leather near the head of the spine & the adjacent corner of the rear cover and most of the label & titling are lacking. The upper two inches of the front joint are worn. viii & 126 pages. There is dampstaining to the top inner corners of the pages throughout with foxing to the preliminary pages & occasional light foxing to the text pages. Good only. From the library of geologist and mining engineer James Douglas with his bookplate mounted on the front endpaper. Douglas, after whom Douglas, Arizona was named, was born in Quebec and spent much of his early life in Scotland. For many years, as a metallurgist and mining engineer, he was involved in the management of several important Western American enterprises.Belgian geologist Jean-Baptiste Julien d'Omalius d'Halloy [1783-1875] was prepared by his family for a life in public service. Throughout his career he held numerous administrative and political posts but his real love was for science and in particular the science of geology which emerged in the nineteenth century and of which he is considered one of the founders. In 1808 he published his essay on the geology of northern France, which proved a seminal work and one of the main starting points of stratigraphic geology. First edition of a classic work.A rare 4-page "Errata for Morse and Feshbach 'Methods of Theoretical Physics'", mechanically reproduced on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide paper, is laid in at the front of the first volume.A wonderful association, from the library of the American mathematician and computer scientist Phyllis Fox, with her name and the date of acquisition penned in ink at the top of the front endpaper of each volume: "Phyllis Fox October 1954".The complete 2 volume set of this classic essential work on theoretical physics, including partial differential equations, leading to Bessel functions, etc.The American mathematician and computer scientist Phyllis Ann Fox earned her B.A. in mathematics at Wellesley College in 1944 and worked for General Electric's differential analyser project. He was a research chemist with the firms Carter & Scattergood of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Quartz Company. He was a keen ornithologist and a devoted member of the Society of Friends. For many years he served as Clerk of his local Meeting at Lansdowne, his Quarterly Meeting and the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

ILLUSTRATED WITH A FULL-PAGE PLATE OF THOMAS SMITH'S KETTLE FOR BOILING INFLAMMABLE FLUIDS - Quarto, 11-1/2 inches high by 9 inches wide. Unbound leaves from the "Transactions of the American Philosophical Society". Two deckle-edged pages in all with large uncut & untrimmed margins, consisting of pages 431 and 432, together with a plate. The full-page plate engraved by Jones depicts the kettle described by the author. Both the text leaf and the plate are loose. There is offsetting to the textual leaf with chips and tears to its edges. Good. Unbound sheets from volume 4 of the "Transactions of the American Philosophical Society".The text describes Thomas P. Smith's idea for a kettle with which to boil inflammable fluids: "When we consider the many unhappy accidents that occur from vessels containing inflammable fluids boiling over and setting fire to the buildings in which manufactories of them are carried on, it must strike us as a matter of importance to form a vessel which should be so constructed as to prevent any of those accidents, and yet of so simple a form as to render it fit for general use." In a postscript, Thomas P. Smith describes that his experiment was unfortunately unsuccessful.
