"This is a memoir of places lived in and loved, stayed at length in, visited briefly, places dreamed about. . . The places here remembered have, mostly, disappeared. . . In these sketches and stories I have tried to suggest how things were, not only for me but for characters in their landscapes, those for whom these places were home." There are chapters on "homeplaces" in 1930s Alabama and Iowa, postwar Manhattan, other cities, towns, and farms. Part II, "Poetics of Travel," ranges from bicycling in postwar Europe to visits during half a century to Sicily, Ireland, Yugoslavia, and the Isle of Canna in the Hebrides. Memoir by British officer Thesiger of his travels by foot and camel in northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula in 1945-50. 8vo, dove gray paper over boards with stylized desert sand dune illustration, blue cloth quarter with white lettering, worn at crown/heel/corners down to cardboard, sunned around margins, edges/end papers age-toned. Illustrated with b&w photos on 16 double-sided plates. The author visited Italy and travelled around the country in the early 1950s. Medium 8vo (9-1/4" x 6-1/8"), faded orangish cloth with spine especially sunned, black lettering on spine, corners/crown/heel frayed, pages age-toned, a couple of pages accidentally creased at bottom corner. Name of former owner, booksale price, other notes in pencil on ffep, a few small marks in margins of some pages in the Sicily section.

Several of the walking or hiking routes go through wildlife sanctuaries; it appears that most of these trails are still available. Introduction gives basic advice on hiking. Royal 8vo (7-1/2" x 10"), taupe cloth with gilt lettering and decoration, pictorial end papers (detail of photo of a porch at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna), practically no visible wear, touch of page-turning soil, in unclipped DJ (price crossed out with new one written in pencil) with remainder mark - small hole punched in front panel.
