Fair/No Jacket. 279 pages, with translator's introduction, ~40 pages of notes, list of correspondents. 8vo, gray cloth soiled and heavily sunned, with black lettering faded on front board and entirely gone from spine which has losses from previously applied sticky tape, tape remnants in 1" strip of back board along spine, corners worn to the cardboard, hinges loose but all pages attached, top edge dust-soiled and foxed, tan stain to title page and facing from laid-in newspaper clipping. Names of former owners Profs. Ann and Warner Berthoff written on front pastedown, gift inscription to her on ffep, underscoring and marginalia by both (hers from two readings 25 years apart) on end papers and throughout. Laid-in clipping from the NYRB Dec. 1985, a review by John Bayley of two other collections of Rilke's letters, conveys with the book.
