Very Good. 28 Roman-numeralled pages precede the 226 photographs on unnumbered pages, some of which take up a page or more, while some are smaller photos grouped on one page. Black and white photographs taken by the author Eudora Welty in her native Mississippi, most of them during her time as a Works Progress Administration "publicity agent, junior grade" during the Great Depression; at the end of the book are photos of her family. Introduction by Reynolds Price is followed by a 1989 interview with Welty on her career in photography, its techniques and various cameras. 9" x 10", reading crease, light shelf wear, a bit of soil to edges, pages unmarked. Bonus: a laid-in 2009 clipping from the TLS - essay by Paul Binding, an appreciation of EW's work in this field. The higher cost that shipping this heavy book will incur has been incorporated into the price.

The Museum of Modern Art, 1955. Soft cover. Good. 193 pages, with prologue by Carl Sandburg. Book catalogue of the famous 1955 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, which subsequently toured the world for eight years. Black and white photos interspersed with sayings and verses. Cover design by Leo Lionni. Softcover catalogue, 8-1/4" x 11", wraps reglued slightly (1/16") out of alignment, wraps worn/toned/soiled, page margins age-toned, unmarked.

New Hampshire Publishing Company, 1975. Soft cover. Good. 165 pages, with b&w photographs and maps (location and trail). Several of the walking or hiking routes go through wildlife sanctuaries; it appears that most of these trails are still available. Introduction gives basic advice on hiking. About 7-1/2" x 9", wraps worn/rubbed along edges and spine, a little creasing to back cover. Pages unmarked.

The Scottish Photography Group, Ltd., 1978. Soft cover. Good. Catalogue for an exhibition held in four cities, August 1978-February 1979. 45 black and white photos, mostly taken on South Uist. Introduction by Richard Hough, list of the photos, historical background essay on Strand's work. Short essay on the Hebrides by the folklorist Margaret Fay Shaw Campbell. Ten inches square, stapled in wraps, whole pamphlet a bit curled, white wraps discolored with age and a bit soiled, laid-in errata sheet.

Sierra Club - Ballantine Books, 1967. Soft cover. Good. 159 pages. Collection of photographs first published by the Sierra Club in 1962, date of the Preface by Porter, Foreword by Sierra Club Executive Director David Brower, and Introduction by naturalist Joseph Wood Krutch. Selections from Thoreau's writings, matched with color nature photographs by Porter. Trade paperback (6-1/2" x 9-1/2"), printed on glossy paper throughout. Book is slightly cocked, wraps soiled, worn along spine and chipped along top edge of front cover, curled at corners, front free end paper wavy. The interior is in very good condition, without marks.

Castle Books, 1958. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 192 pages, with Index, Selected Bibliography, Note on Techniques. Six-page introduction by the editors, who also provided a one-page note on each photographer. Reproductions of photographs 19 photographers from the 1840s (calotypes, daguerrotypes) to the 1930s and 1940s (Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ansel Adams). Squarish book (10" x 11.5"), black paper over boards with gray quarter binding and black letters on spine, worn at crown and heel (~1/4" chip to each), light soil to boards, faint foxing to top edge, a few pages accidentally dog-eared at bottom. Name of former owner and old price written on first free end paper. Pages unmarked.

Dover Publications, Inc., 1973. 2nd Edition . Soft cover. Good. 97 b&w photos of New York City, taken by Berenice Abbott in the 1930s. Originally published 1939 as Changing New York; intro by Audrey McMahon and captions by Elizabeth McCausland are from that first edition. Eleven pages of front matter including list of plates. Landscape-layout paperback, 11-1/4" x 10", heavy wear along the bottom edges of the wraps, lighter wear elsewhere, inside covers stained/soiled with blue flecks, pages a bit rippled as from damp damage. Pages unmarked.

Introduction and captions by Mary Black, curator of painting and sculpture. Quarto-sized (9" x 12") paperback, wear to corners and edges (especially front bottom and heel) of wraps, small tear to top edge of ffep, printed on semi-gloss stock. Pages unmarked. Paul Hartmann, 1949. Soft cover. Good. THIS BOOK IS IN FRENCH (but consists mostly of photographs). Pages unnumbered; author's introduction is six pages, there are 167 photographs on b&w plates, and 12 pages of annotations on the photos. Original copyright 1937. Approximately 18 x 24 cm, wraps worn/creased/rubbed/soiled, spine sunned to brown, separating backstrip anchored with clear tape, rough-cut edges in the French manner (a few of them uncut), edges/end papers/pages age-toned. Some white areas on plates have faint brownish image transfer from facing page. Old price in pencil on title page, no other marks observed.

The MIT Press, 1984. Soft cover. Very Good. 162 pages, with Bibliography, Index of Cambridge Commercial Photographers 1858-1945, Foreword by Harvard Professor of History Oscar Handlin. Eighty-one b&w photos of Cambridge, Massachusetts, dated 1844-1945, with historical annotation of each. Landscape layout trade paperback (10-1/2" x 8"), light shelf wear, rubbing to wraps especially along spine. Gift inscription on half-title, interior pages unmarked.

Strand's b&w photographs printed on semi-glossy stock, with texts (poems, sermons, laws, essays) selected by the editor interspersed. Foreword by Newhall, Introduction by Strand. Imperial 8vo (8-3/4" x 11-1/4"), grayish-brown cloth with white lettering, wear to corners/crown/heel with chip to backstrip at crown, edges/end papers age-toned. The book has a slight musty smell, most likely related to the ink or paper-finish (other books with which it was stored, in dry conditions, have no odor). Gift card affixed to front pastedown, pages unmarked.

Tour of the mediaeval art museum in Fort Tryon Park, Manhattan, constituted from components of European monasteries and housing the Unicorn Tapestries, Robert Campin's Annunciation (c. 1425), sculptures and artifacts; illustrated throughout with color photographs (plates and cuts) and diagrams of each room. 7-1/4" x 9-1/4", printed on glossy stock, very light shelf wear, touch of foxing to end papers, pages unmarked. Bonus with this copy is a laid-in clipping (folded in tissue paper to prevent staining the book) of a 1978 TLS review by Geoffrey Grigson of Margaret B. Freeman's book on the Unicorn Tapestries.

Sixty-three b&w photos on plates, 53 line drawings. 8vo, turquoise cloth with gilt lettering on spine, worn at corners/crown/heel and along edges of boards, brown topstain, tan stain from newspaper clipping to front end papers. Old prices in pencil on front pastedown, names of former owners on ffep, pencil underscoring and/or marginalia on approximately 30 pages. Laid in clipping from the NYT of Sept. 28, 1974 is excerpts from CL-S's speech upon entering the Academie Francaise - "We Are We Are You Are You Are We Are You".
