First American edition of English translation, done from the Italian of Silone's first version of this anti-fascist novel. Written while Silone was in exile in Switzerland, it was first published in German 1936. 8vo, light green cloth with gilt lettering readable on front board but more faded on sunned spine, wraps soiled, fore-edge rough-cut, wear with fraying to corners/crown/heel, book slightly cocked, hinges cracked, text block a bit loose from binding though still attached - block slides to flush with bottom edge of the boards while unusually far down (3/8") from the top. Small newspaper clipping mentioning Silone taped to ffep, where there is also an old price in pencil. No markings observed on text pages.

First American edition of this translation of collected autobiographical and other prose sketches by the Italian poet who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1975. These were written as vignettes for a Milan newspaper beginning in 1948 and first published in Italian in 1956, with additional sketches in 1961 and 1969 editions. 8vo, deep yellow cloth with brown lettering on spine, foxing/dust soil to top edge and top board edges, back board slightly bowed, otherwise practically no visible wear. Unclipped DJ is worn along top edges and smudged on front panel. Pages bright and unmarked.
