Description:
Chicago: The Open Court Publishing Co.,  1916 1st Am. ed. 194pp. + index pp. & ads. t.e.g. green cloth sm 8vo: w/gilt titles: Very Good+ in a Good+ dj [antique name ffep; else VG+; dj = small loss @ spine head; small hole near bottom corner of front cover; else G+ in protective Brodart cover] French writer and scholar Romain Rolland (1866-1944) was an outspoken pacifist before, during and after the Great War. He wrote many of the pieces contained in this translation for Swiss newspapers. To get away from angry French cries of traitor, he lived in self-imposed exile in Switzerland where he was awarded the 1915 Nobel Prize for Literature in the same year that this volume, Au-Dessus de la Melee was first published. This is a very nice copy of this interesting work.
