Discusses and describes Agfa developers in substance and ready for use, intensifiers, reducers, isolar plates and flat films. Includes useful tables for F stop settings for places and portraits, as well as time of day and month.

Complete instructions for the beginner, from choice of cameras through film developing, printing the picture and printing-out papers, exposures, dark room and its illumination, etc. Makes specific reference to Agfa products. Text in English.

Paris: Société Photographique de Toulouse et Gauthier-Villars, 1901. First editions. 16mos., frontispiece illustration, variable paginations, with advertisements, engravings, charts and tables. The frontispiece in the 1900 issue is an original silver print. 4 volumes. 3 volumes bound in original paper wrappers, 1 bound in contemporary cloth over boards. The wrappers are chipped at the edges, with 1899 and 1901 issues showing staining, and 1900 rebacked in paper. All volumes are internally good to very good. This periodical was published yearly, beginning in 1876 and concluding in 1910. A pocket compendium printed so that notations on photographs made could be added to the daily calendar; includes an extensive listing of European photographic societies, photographic journals, a bibliography of recent publications, and reviews of the latest equipment, processes and an extensive list of French photographers. NY: S.D. Humphrey, 1858. Fifth edition. 8vo., xii, 13-214 pp., 5 pp. adverts. Publisher's gilt-titled red cloth which is lightly rubbed at the tips. The previous owner's neat signature is written on the first blank leaf, and there are a few pencil underlinings to the first printed page, with a tiny nick at the bottom blank margin of p. 21 - 24. A near fine and bright copy. Samuel Humphrey published his first manual in 1849, and the first photographic magazine in the world, THE DAGUERREIAN JOURNAL, 1850; both were key influences in the spread of the process in the U.S. His first manual was 81 pp., reprinted again in 1849, with a third edition in 1853. This, the fifth edition, is considerably enlarged and improved. Roosens and Salu No.2894.

Lightly worn at edges; original owner's name handwritten on the blank margin of nearly every recto page, with juvenile scribbles on the front and rear blanks and endpapers, remnants of paper labels on the pastedowns. Short tape repair to the blank reverse of the final folding plate. Housed in a new card pamphlet case with printed paper labels. Very good. As the title suggests, this is a treatise on the photographic applications used in conducting surveys by the military. The author acknowledges his debt to A. Chevallier, for his ingenious adaptation of a photographic camera to make a surveying plane-table, an essential tool in topographic mapping.
