This is the tale of a family of poor, humanized mice whose father teaches each of his 8 sons how to play a magic flute and then sends them out into the world to spread happiness. There is a colorful border on each page of text and many, many striking, vibrantly colored full page + in text illustrations that almost seem to be hand-done. One of the best picture books for children. See Mahoney et. al p.136 and Five Years of Childrens Books p.76.

A charming board picture book, this is illustrated by noted artist JOSEPH LADA with pictorial covers plus 20 full page color lithographs of humanized animals. A few lines of verse by Czech poet Petr Kricka are below each picture. Hurlimann (p.226) says his "fresh and genuine vision is timeless" and notes that Jiri Trnka's work is "barely thinkable without the splendid popular tales and drawings of his predecessor Joseph Lada." .

Printed on thick board pages, each page shows little children at play at various activites: playing soldier, farming, on the seesaw and more. On one page there is a strange looking Black man, barefoot but wearing a top hat and tails and he is playing a drum as he walks. Charming color lithos fill every page.

The story of a cat and a dog who decide to live together. Illustrated by Capek with marvelous full page color illustrations in a folk-peasant style somewhat reminiscent of Francoise. Capek was a zech illustrator and poet, best known for creating the word "robot" with his brother, Karel. He was arrested by the Nazis and sent to Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp where he died in 1045. This title published in the U.S. in 1963 under the title Harum Scarum.
