Hakluyt Society, 1991-12-28. Hardcover. Very Good. 0x0x0. No dust jacket, Blue cloth boards have minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Jean Barbot, who served as a commercial agent on French slave-trading voyages to West Africa in 1678-9 and 1681-2, in 1683 began an account of the Guinea coast, based partly on his voyage journals (only one of which is extant) and partly on previous printed sources. The work was interrupted by his flight to England, as a Huguenot refugee, in 1685, and not finished until 1688. The manuscript was eventually published in 1732. Barbot's book had considerable influence on later European attitudes to Black Africa and the Atlantic slave trade and in modern writings on both subjects is frequently cited as evidence. The French account serves as the base for the present… Read More

Bloomsbury Academic, 2014-01-30. Hardcover. Very Good. 9x6x0. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked.vThe Dawn of the Cheap Press provides the first detailed study of the mid-Victorian campaign for the repeal of the taxes on knowledge for over a hundred years. Using the recently discovered papers of the Association for the Promotion of the Repeal of the Taxes on Knowledge and taking advantage of new forms of research made possible by the digitisation of nineteenth century newspapers, it assesses the impact of the removal of the last surviving legal disabilities on the newspaper industry, the nature of journalism, and the cultures and practices of newspaper reading. The book demonstrates that the campaign against the taxes on knowledge retained broad popular appeal, and played an important role in the politics of mid-Victorian budgets. It not only makes a seminal contribution to the history of the nineteenth century press and print culture, but also illuminates the culture and… Read More

Pigeon Point Pub, 1999-01-01. Unknown Binding. Very Good. 8x5x0. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Within days of the death of Princess Diana, Rayelan Allan received a call from a nervous European. The caller said Diana had been sacrificed to create the New World Religion. He went on to say that the place of her death, Pont de L'Ala was more than a Temple to the Goddess Diana. It was an ancient Hospice, called the Bridge of Souls. Those killed at Pont de L'Alma go directly to Heaven and sit at the Throne of God. Robert Anton Wilson calls this theory of Diana's death, The most intricately interesting scenario to emerge...
