[Washington], 1846. 131pp. Dbd. Minor marginal dampstain to a couple of leaves. Very good. Sen. Doc., 29th Cong. 1st Sess. A fundamental document in the history of the Mexican-American War. President Polk describes the status of Mexican-American relations, asserts that a state of war exists, and calls for upon the Congress to recognize the state of affairs. Specifically, Polk transmits the details of the Slidell mission, which sought the purchase of New Mexico and California. The failure of John Slidell's mission was a proximate cause of the ensuing hostilities. This message is dated May 11, 1846, and Congress declared war the very next day. Also included is supporting correspondence and the details of U.S. and Mexican troop movements. TUTOROW 1668.
