This is Volume II only of the first edition, first printing of the three-volume "definitive" edition of Churchill's war speeches, published during Churchill's second and final premiership. This second volume contains speeches spanning 25 June 1941 to 6 September 1943. After Churchill returned to 10 Downing Street in October 1951, the publisher reissued the seven War Speeches volumes as a new, three-volume edition. This edition is, in many ways, superior to the original seven wartime editions in both aesthetics and content. Gone is the cheap economy paper of the wartime editions. Originally issued in 1951 when Churchill returned as Prime Minister, the definitive 3-volume British edition of Churchill's War Speeches was superior to the original 7 wartime editions in both content and aesthetics. Consolidated into three uniform volumes, the set also added five speeches and a helpful index. The British first editions measured a substantial 10 x 6.25 inches (25.4 x 15.9 cm) with attractive, uniform dust jackets. As was the case with many postwar British editions of Churchill's works, this set appeared in an unauthorized, copyright violation Taiwanese edition. Churchill's War Speeches were first published by Cassell in seven volumes between 1941 and 1946, followed by Charles Eade's definitive edition in three volumes in 1952. This is a collection of eight early Second World War pamphlets, each publishing British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s speeches spanning 13 May 1940 to 12 November 1940. These pamphlets were published in Canada simultaneously by three Canadian newspapers on or about 13 December 1940. The newspapers were the Regina Leader-Post, Winnipeg Free Press, and Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Each of the three newspapers put out their own edition in their respective cities at the same time. A week later, there was also a collective edition with all three newspapers listed as publishers together on the title page. This is the first edition, first printing of the three-volume "definitive" edition of Churchill's war speeches, a presentation set inscribed by the compiler, Charles Eade, to newspaper magnate Viscount Rothermere. The six-line inked inscription on the Volume One front free endpaper recto reads: "To | Viscount Rothermere | From | the Compiler | Charles Eade | September 3, 1952.” This set is triply compelling – for condition, as a Compiler’s presentation copy, and for its recipient, an important Churchill association. Condition is near fine in near fine dust jackets. The blue cloth bindings are square, clean, and tight with only trivial shelf wear confined to extremities. The contents are likewise notably clean, with no spotting and no previous ownership marks apart from the presentation inscription.
