Boston Houghton Osgood, 1872, hardcover. Later printing, Roslyn Edition, 1876. Translated by William Cullen Bryant, whose preface is dated 1871 [was the date of the original publication of volume 1]. Gifted from Mrs. E. H. Chapin to Henry C. Leonard (and with another ownership). -- Hardcover, rust cloth with beveled edges, gold decoration, AEG all-edges-gilt (dazzling), 272+vi+256 pages. Condition: very good minus (one-third of front-cover is rubbed; spine lettering bit dulled and tips tiny wear). -- Nice copy otherwise, pages are bright and clear, binding is tight.

Description:
Boston: James R. Osgood, 1873. Best known for his early poem "Thanatopsis, " Bryant (1794-1870) was a prominent "Public Intellectual" throughout his lifetime. Translation of the Iliad and the Odyssey occupied him in the last years of his life. Originally published in 1871. These are Very Good (Plus) copies of a Later Printing, from two years later. Maroon cloth bindings with gilt lettering on the spine and titled on the front covers. Chamfered edges and gilt on the top edges. Clean texts; 272 pages and 256 pages. Light wear and minor discolorations; there is a previous-owner signature inked on the second free endpapers. Quite nice little volumes, rather uncommon; and an interesting rendition as well. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Later Printing.. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.
