Pages are heavily tanned and thumbed at the edges. Binding has remained firm. Heavy foxing throughout Corners are dogeared in places. Water marks to page edges and corners. Boards have been heavily rub worn with noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a noticeably frayed and spine ends are crushed, with some small splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Surface tears to leather. Splitting to spine joints and ends.

Spine & corners a little bumped, gilt on spine faded, short split in foot of rear joint, name on front endpaper, very slight foxing, lower margin of some signatures cropped, otherwise VG.

More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Pen inscription to front pastedown and free endpaper. Moderate cracking to front hinge, exposing netting, but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Prominent splitting to joints. Spine has similar rubbing and tanning with visible splitting and crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear.

Moderate cracking to hinges, with exposed netting, pages are loose. Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. Markings to some pages. Previous owner's inscription to rear of frontispiece. Front free endpaper cut out. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces.Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Tears to cloth to spine. Wear marks overall.

GOOD / NO DUST JACKET. viii, 423 pp. Text clean and unmarked except for gift inscription at free front endpaper. Illustrated with frontispiece engraving of William Cowper, Esq. Brown leather boards with red compartment at spine lettered in gilt, with four raised bands decorated in gilt. Edges rubbed, corners worn to boards, joints starting to split at spine top and tail. Hinges cracked, but holding, interior binding intact and firm.

Size 4 7/8" Free front endpaper bears former owner's inscription dated 1897, and gift inscription dated 1823. Half green calf over marbled boards. All edges marbled. Hinges are sound. Textblock is tight. Occasional light foxing. Corners rubbed and worn. Spine heads rubbed. Volume II back cover edge is dented. Small open tear at top corner in Volume II pages 13-16. No markings internally, just those on front endpapers. Overall condition very good.

Boston: Manning & Loring and E. Lincoln, 1802. Hardcover. Fair. Later printing. Volume one only. 16mo. Half-leather with marbled papercovered boards and marbled top edge. Fair only with owner stamp on the title page, three pages with some scribbling not affecting the text, missing the frontispiece, foxing throughout, and the leather of the spine has completely perished, though the binding remains tight and sound, and the hinges have been repaired.
